Coulda swore I saw some F-22's around Ford Island area when I was in Oahu last May. They must have been flying out of Hickam AFB.

Yeah, there's a bunch of F-22s at Hickam. You can see them when you're landing at the airport too

Hickam has 22s, strictly USAF. The 35 is the "JSF" or Joint Strike Fighter. It was meant to be used by all branches with different variants. A model is the USAF, runway landing. B model is Navy with tailhook and bigger brakes. C model is the vertical take off model for the Crayon eaters.

Yeah, I've been reading about the 35 for some time. Several pilots I know think it's crap. Tough to argue since there is no ONE aircraft capable of doing everything. Something meant to do everything well, doesn't do anything great. That's my .02

Unless it's an F/A-18, then it does everything great :D

100%. I was on the test team for the KC-46. When we first read through the deliverables we were amazed. They wanted a tanker that did refueling, cargo, and defense all in one in an airframe not meant to carry as much weight and could land at a bunch of shorter airfields. Big AF/DoD might have some bright minds, but they want to pack all these capabilities into one plane to save money on procurement.

Don’t get me started on the F-35 JSF. Damn thing is a money pit.

It's a noble goal. They need to be mindful of taxpayer dollars. Commendable. But some ideas need to be recognized for what they are: crap. It solidifies the adage that a Zebra was a horse designed by committee.

Reminds me of the C-27 program...

    Enter the CG.

FWIW. The C-27 spent a whopping 0 hours in operations for the AF.

Thats why we use the "fixed price contract" route. BUT, it bites us on the back side when we have to retrofit what we bought under that fixed price. I have some acquisition training... so I understand it to a certain level. Its all crap. No aircraft can do all things well. Thats why we have the different letter at the front explaining what it does (A - Attack, B - Bomber, C - Cargo, etc). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1962_United_States_Tri-Service_aircraft_designation_system

Or the Navy's procurement of the P-8 which is built to do Sub Hunting. The Navy forgot to add into the contract that it needed to find Subs... so it had to be completely redone after the contract was finished.

Hey, we'd like to buy a sub hunter. Oh yeah, and it needs to find subs.

I can't remember all the details, but I remember being on the telecon with the director of DoD Acquisition and testing on a "Lessons learned" call. It was more of him yelling at us to not be stupid and if something is missing to speak up.
