Baja Designs | SAE Compliance Service Bulletin

In November 2019 a third party made Baja Designs aware that the SAE Squadron was out of compliance with J583 guidelines. We immediately shipped samples to a testing facility for further verification. Our testing discovered that the light was over by 119 candelas on the upward horizontal axis. In more understandable terms, that is the equivalent of 1.19 candles at 10 meters. Our engineering department has been working on a fix for existing customers ensuring their SAE Squadron’s comply. We have developed a lens insert that has been tested and confirmed by Intertek, the global leader in compliance testing, that can be installed into existing products.

Current backorders of our SAE Squadron will ship in 3-4 weeks. Existing customers can either install the insert themselves or contact Baja Designs directly requesting a shipping label. Once we receive the light in-house, our trained technicians will update the SAE Squadron followed by expediting the now compliant Squadron back free of charge.

Please reach out to Baja Designs directly ensuring your SAE Squadron is updated within a timely manner.

SAE compliance does not make these legal for road use though. There is still DOT compliance. You can still get tickets for running these lights.

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is a world wide organization that sets automotive standards for the manufacturing, testing and design of car lightings. ... Note: SAE approved headlights and tail lights are not street legal in US, until they are approved by DOT.

Im curious if you have the Rigid "Street Legal" pods and get a tickets for having the lights, can you get Rigid to pay the ticket for advertising they are "street legal"?

from their other post (and have seen similar things posted by rigid)

In the United States, fog lights require SAE J583 compliance in order to be used on any official roadway. Since fog lights are not mandatory on a vehicle, DOT doesn’t have a requirement for fog lights and has left this as well as many other requirements up to SAE to determine the standards. Through their expertise, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has come up with and agreed upon a standard for all US fog lights (J583) to adhere to. These standards require the lights to meet very strict guidelines to maintain the safety of motorists. The new Baja Designs' SAE Squadron meets these strict standards and can be used legally in all 50 states as a (J583) fog light.

Well rigid is saying their light are SAE/DOT compliant...

What i dont like is that I can not find the actual standards on the rule, unless you want to pay $81 for the document from the SAE site...

I also understand that that SAE is just the "guidelines" for building components to a specific performance and safety standard, and new SAE standards can become mandatory to become DOT approved. But i have not seen anything stating lights that meet SAE standards are DOT approved for use on public roads in any state...

What's the average wait time to get a reply to an email sent? Not being needy just curious if the holidays are having an effect.

    Thanks!

    Hey guys,

Holidays and such have slowed us down. We aim to respond to all correspondence within 24 hours, but can be delayed. If anyone has been waiting more than a couple days on a response, please PM me and I will look into the bottleneck.

    Thanks,
    Chris F.

@Baja Designs, have the SAE fogs been redesigned/updated or are they currently sold with the aforementioned lens insert?

I’ve just heard that they are working on redesigning them.

So I was curious if that was true and if there is an expected release date

Baja is field-testing a redesigned SAE fog, but it is not yet available for sale. The current SAE lights have the insert as mentioned above.
