I am in the market for a new tonneau cover. I narrowed it down to the MX4 and UltraFLex. However the one thing the MX4 had over the UltraFlex was the ability to keep the rail system.

However looking at their site and after contacting Bak it appears the new design for the Tacoma no longer allows use of the rail system! Their reason was "to improve security"

Here's the install guide that shows how the rail system is completely covered now
    https://bakindustries.com/images/imgs/Installation_Guides/BAKFLIP_318A0062 _015-15Tacoma_SUPPLEMENTAL REV.021916.pdf

I can't find any more info on this, not even retailers are mentioning this on their sites. Anyone get a new MX4 in the past few weeks?

Just received mine and it moves the oem rails down. I believe that installation guide is for second gen.

^^^. I just installed my Bakflip MX4 today and it just lowers the rails. Great cover and Bakflip has a $100 Mail in Rebate right now.

Was able to find a few pics of the cover. I will get a few of the prop rods once I get back home. Excuse my dirty truck. :)

How is the durability of the MX4?

That was my biggest concern. The pictures on Amazon show that the panels can be dented, marked or scratched very easily.

I have the Bakflip G2. I put it on there right after I bought the truck. I do have a dent in one of the panels where I left a tool and folded the cover up. I love the cover. The MX-4 has stronger panels and better water seals. The photos I've seen show the MX4 as a 4 panel cover and the G2 as a 3 panel cover. I don't know if that the case however short bed vs. long bed? Always, I could put some photos up to show how the G2 has held up over a couple of years and 50 thousand miles in the desert.

I have had mine for 2 years. My 6 year old regularly walks on it and I thrown stuff on it. I am not being overly rough with it though! I did scratch mine with a piece of metal but it seems to hold up decently20191127_140705.jpg
The white on the corner is spilled wax from waxing the truck. It doesn't like wax!

This G2 is a couple if years old. I think it has held up pretty good.

how is it driving with it folded back? can you drive (highway speeds) with it folded back once, twice, all the way? does it rattle around or worse yet catch the wind and slam back down?

You can drive with it folded back once or twice. Just have to make sure it's buckled in a tied down a bit with the two straps.

The 2 safe ways to drive with it open are folded twice and strapped in or folded up against the back glass and the prop rods in place. A single fold, the straps are too short. If you hit a bump and it catches the wind! It might cause some damage!

I have driven around 45mph with it folded against the cab, however, I take it off and put it in the bed fir 80-95mph type driving.
