Remote Start

Who installed it and what type would you recommend??? Thanks in advance.

 

I do not have it but my buddy put in a viper starter. He has had it for about three years and loves it.

 

my viper works like a champ esp on those cold mornings.

 

x2. Only drawback I hear about it is that the remote eats batteries like candy.

 

I have a prestige installed in mine and have it in my past 3 vehicles and I love it. works great and exactly as it should. It does eat up the battery, so i just invested in some rechargeable batteries. charges up like in a hour or so and back in for about another 30-60 days, or something like that.

 

I have a viper , it works great and still have my factory battery ( for now ) in my 05 dbl cab

Speaking as a former stereo installer (7 yrs installing for a couple different companies, including Car Toys), I would not recommend another alarm system than a Viper or Python. For those that don't know, both brands are made by the same parent company Directed Electronics, Inc. (DEI also acquired Clifford alarms several years back, but last Clifford system I dealt with still had bugs that the Viper/Python systems did not have).

The newer 2way systems did go through batteries quickly... Downfall of knowing when your alarm is activated, but a worthwhile downfall. As Paul said above, a small investment in rechargable batteries is very effective.

I'm buying my first Tacoma here this week (hopefully, finding the right one has been difficult), and the first thing going in is going to be an alarm/remote starter.

 

Python has a new 2-way, the 991 that charges off a mini usb, comes with the charger

 

Thanks for the reminder... Since I've been looking into a Tacoma, I've started researching the newer alarms and now that you mention it, I did see something about that (just didn't pay much attention as I was more interested in the Smart Start apps for iPhone/BBerry/Andr... no more batteries period!!)

 

Just mod a battery charger into the truck that uses the converter.

 

how about just buying a cell phone charger with a mini usb on it. it works on the autopage's like that. the 915 and 1100 both are rechargable

link for the 915. 1100 and 915 are identical, just the main remote is different. just another option for you.

 

Is it ok to put a remote in the 6 speed manual? Any one do this?

 

dei, compustar, and autopage all have programming for it. other than those 3 you will have to check with the manuf.

 

Viper, I believe, is one of the few that will work with a manual. Theres a process you need to go through to do it. Had the 5901 on my TSX and removed it to put on my 6spd. Some say a remote start is worthless - I say when its snowing outside or the temps in/above the mid 90's its a godsend!

- engine running and doors closed
- tranny in neutral
- press brake
- apply e-brake
- release brake
- within 15 seconds active remote start (hit button on the side of the remote)
- parking lights flash 5x's to show its active
- turn ignition off (car stays running)
- exit vehicle
- arm the alarm (vehicle shuts down)
* if door is opened or alarm is activated the remote start will not activate.

Just purchase excellent insurance coverage. Don't waist money on an alarm, just simply upgrade your insurance.

If you do the math, the likely hood of your truck being stolen is so remote its not even worth thinking about an alarm. Alarms are yesterday's newspaper...they are a temporary band aid for those who fear that they their truck MIGHT be stolen. Alarms are merely a placebo that make you think your truck is secure and safe. If someone really wants your truck an alarm is not going to stop the thief.

In the end a great insurance policy can only provide you with piece of mind. For what its worth....

I had a viper installed in my 2005 Kia Amanti when I bought it, had it removed and reinstalled in my 2010 Tacoma when I bought it. Works flawlessly.

 

Kinda lost me with your closing statement.

Being a geezer I have maxed out my insurance policy after having to pay out for all of the uninsured motorists in Texas all subconsciously being attracted to my wife's car and having to pay all of the ridiculous expenses associated with them. Having an alarm helps reduce my overall premiums which helps as it seems that no one at "higher, higher" is really interested in putting a stop to the constant flow of uninsured motorist crossing our southern border, but I digress. I keep automobiles long enough that the cost of the alarm pays for itself way before I consider letting go of them. Your mileage may vary.

Other that the silly looking faux carbon fiber look on the remote which was easily rectified the Galaxy 5000RS-2W work fine for me and my LiteSPOT rock lights are controlled by one of the accessory buttons making it nice for tinkering around the campsite at night without scaring off all of the wildlife. The Galaxy unit has the remote start feature which is nice for us now that we live in a four climate area for winter and summer startups to warm up and cool down the truck to appease the cantankerous old man in me. The two way bit I could care less about as a simple chirp or flash of light works just as well but the range of operation with the remote is quite impressive. The unit offers heaps of other features such as a turbo timer and other bits but I doubt I will use most of them as I pretty much have it doing what I want it to do now.

 

Had a compustar starter installed by the dealer when i bought the truck
have had no problems, great range.

 

Sure seem to be a lot of combo 'alarm/remote start' posts here..
How about some quality/reliable 'remote start only' (ie-no alarm) recommendations...
