What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Sooo....how does the truck feel with them on? Noticeably different?

 

If you watch the video from @Timmah!, it shows how to check the joint(s) in the column without assistance from anyone else. My tilt ball was pretty tight, and the shim made it EXTRA tight. It was actually quite the struggle to get everything back together. Made the steering tight AF though, just like it should be.

 

I'm going with a locker, it'd be dumb not to. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

 

No pics but got the roof and driver door all sound deadened. Also prepped the passenger side. Have a few more things to do before the insulation gets here on Monday.

Also have to figure out why my truck didn’t start. Pretty sure it’s the starter but I’ll dig into it more tomorrow. Shit never ends

How was it removing the headliner?

 

Yeah there was a typical click like there has been since I dunked it. Voltmeter had the battery at 12 volts so I’ll look more into it tomorrow

Not bad at all, the shitty stock sound deadening was a PITA to get off but it was quite easy besides that

 

Is yours an auto? When I went through a slurry of beautiful Alabama red water I had issues as well, it ended up being the neutral safety switch, cleaned it up and everything was good till the tranny took a shit...

 

If you have an easy way to measure at the actual starter plug/connectors while someone turns the key, if you have 12V at starter with key turned to start, it's in the starter. If no 12V you're looking upstream. Not trying to tell you something you didn't already know man. Just kinda thinking it through out loud, I'll chill

 

Sounds like typical starter contact symptoms. Remove starter, clean contacts, good to go. Or replace the contacts for like $10...

Pretty sure that’s what it is since it was my issue on my way home from the wheeling trip. Any tips on removing the starter? I know it’s a huge PITA for 3.4L

 

It's not that bad. Kind of a pain, but not horrible. I had to drop my skids to get at the mounting bolts, but other than that, pretty easy. Takes some tweaking to get the starter to fit out of the wheel well, but that's the hardest part. See @Timmah! video here...

Should just get rid of the egr.

 

I would if there was a way, it would not pass emissions, I’m not sure if there is a record that shows it’s an EGR truck.
I would hate to remove it all and the inspection says it’s missing and fails

 

I think I got mine out going downwards. At least I hope, cause I will never be able to take it out the side like that again.

 

talk to me about this sound deadening issue. I have seen many a post on TW about it but i have never had any concerns or gripes about it and don't really notice anything unusual, even on the highway, all i hear is wind noise I suppose ... other than the new wind rattle flapping in the passenger area vents
maybe i have different insulation inside my panels, they have never been removed
what are the sounds that make it annoying to you (or anybody else) please educate me!

 

No educating on this. It's an opinion. Its a preference. The opinion that one would like less road and wind noise while driving at speed. Plenty to read here about it.

 

Trick is to use the right material. Which doesn't look like he did. I think he used basic vent insulation which won't do much. You want to use heavy butyl based stuff to absorb vibration. RAMmat has so good info on this.

 

i just would like to know what it sounds like and if i should be concerned or not
there is a developing problem with my drivers window (starting to abnormal rattle when partially down) that i have yet to complain about but is on my list to tackle, it never ends
i think i may be the one at fault for this though for trying to clean the run channel

@Sperrunner told me i should just get a new 3rd gen Tacoma

 

If the road noise your taco makes doesnt bother you, you have nothing to address. The noise is there whether you like it or not. Some may have offroad tires that create a bit more noise. Some are used to driving higher end vehicles that are actually comfortable and quiet. But that's still a preference. If the Tacoma noise is fine for you than you have nothing to worry about
