    Got the wife a 2020 Sienna back in October.

    Was meaning to verify your claim- the ground clearance is really tight on these vehicles btw.

    ^THIS^ With some of the advise I am seeing here I suggest leaving it up to the pros if you don’t even have the canister removal tool to start with. I change my own every 5K and have never had to even remotely go down the road of some of the suggestions I’m reading here. Right tools and the job is simple. If the skid plate is causing you problems then don’t touch the filter canister.

    I have been changing my oil for 40 years. Started every 3k miles now we are up to 10k. Never had a problem with oil filters until now has always been simple for me.

    Now after 40 years any countless oil filters, this one requires effort.

    Is it me forgetting how to change oil after forty years or the design.

    Maybe, but even with the skid plate removal, the job is not that difficult.

    As a community we should probably be trying to encourage diy instead of dissuading it.

    No. That was a 50-cent saving. ;) The filter cap retails for $50, which means it costs the dealer $30 and Toyota less than $10...

    Thoroughly oil the threads on that aluminum filter cap to prevent galling.

    Did you get OEM or Dorman P/N 917016?

    I'd say it's your refusal to accept that the cartridge design functions differently than the methods used on the throw away filters you have changed for 40 years.

    Sure the first time might be an issue, mine was really tight from the factory. I had to grip the plastic housing in a bench vise to remove the metal drain plug. But since then no problem, but then I don't tighten the plastic housing or the drain plug like I'm torque the cylinder head of Cat diesel either.

    The biggest bitch is taking off the skid plate...and that's just a minor annoyance, not enough to get me to pay $400 for the TRD Pro skid plate w/access hole

    Hahaha Subaru much more DIY!!!!! They mounted the oil filter and then decided the complete exhaust system needs to surround it for protection and heat! Then they added heat shield so the filter is in a tunnel of sharp jagged metal. So you cut up you hand and get oil all over the exhaust every change!. Atleast on my wifes 2011 Impreza anyways.

    This is why I steered clear of the metal housing. Al on Al plus heat and cool cycles is a disaster waiting to happen.

    My housing was only hard to get off once, after the second free dealer change at 20k. Since then it's been no problem. The housing doesnt need any torque, it's got an oring. When it's all the way screwed in stop.
