Well I played around a little bit in my 2002 to see if the 4wd operated properly and it does but I was curious if someone could explain the RR diff lock. If I'm thinking correctly it would engage both rear wheels in 2wd or 4wd? Well when I press the rr diff lock button it flashes on the dash and when I drop the clutch only one tire spins so I'm assuming it is not working properly.

Okay so I'm just dumb lol and if you take it out of 4low then it disengages it?

Only work in 4lo as a safety feature to prevent damage.

Remove the driver side kick panel and cut the grey wire from the 4wd computer and ground it. This will allow your RR to lock at anytime you engage it, meaning it'll work in 4hi or 2wd.

Assuming you have the factory E-locker, as others said, it needs to be in 4low for the locker to work.

Look up "grey wire mod" if you want it to engage in 2wd. The TRD prerunners have an identical locker, but they obviously don't have a low range, OR 4wd, so the grey wire mod tricks the truck into allowing you to engage it in 2hi. It's relatively popular, although I personally don't see the point, I jokingly call it the donut mod, since that's all I see it being good for.

Generally speaking, the locker should only be engaged at very slow speeds, and in very loose terrain (Toyota helps you remember this by only allowing you to engage it in 4lo). When offroading, just leave it off until you actually need it. You're going to be in 4wd long before you ever come close to needing the locker.

Got it, thanks. And I agree don't see the point in eating up tires taking turns on pavement, which I drive on a lot. Could have just read the door right next to me about how to OP operate it lol 20191207_171119.jpg

Yeah if you have it engaged in 4lo then it will disengage itself if you go into 4hi or 2wd.

There is an easy mod called the Grey Wire mod on TW where you can wire the locker to work any time you want it, 2wd or 4hi
