    At almost 200k miles, it's time to replace the clutch in my 2003 V6 4x4 xcab. My garage isn't big enough to tackle this job nor do I think I want to do it. I was hoping to get a feel for what I'm about to spend. I want to hire the best mechanic I can find to do this and don't mind paying the premium. Just from watching Timmy the tool guy's videos I can see this is a tough job. I'd expect to pay maybe 2 grand for this all in - allowing for lots of replacement parts, bearings, & other stuff the wrench will find on the way in that wasn't expected. If it's a wear item I plan to replace it.

    Does this sound like a realistic expectation? Am I over/underestimating? I plan to drive this truck for many more years as everything else is in great shape. I hope I never have to sell it actually. But for now this is my daily driver, my only vehicle, and I want it in tip top shape.

    I was quoted $1200-1500 to replace a clutch and input bearing from a local independent transmission shop here in town. $2000 sounds a little high to me, but that could be a fair price depending on what parts you get replaced.

    Sounds like I'm probably in the ballpark then. Everything here is more expensive than most places. Looking to use all OEM parts FWIW.

    Did mine a few years ago at 170k at a reputable shop.. costs just $1100 here in CA... Dont think it was OEM parts though...

    So I had mine done 6 months ago or so


    Since the transmission has to be dropped I had the following done

    Engine Rear main seal
    Transmission front input shaft seal
    Transfer case input seal
    Transmission center mount, there is a plastic type bushing there in the center.
    Redline transmission fluid

    May as well do the gear shift ball bushing too.

    You will save yourself a lot of money now if one of these go bad later.
    All these parts are out and takes very little to do the added maintenance.

    The dealership actually let me supply the parts that I get from another toyota dealership for a lot cheaper

    Cost me around 900 labor plus the parts.

    so what are the odds of the clutch on mine going first or the Engine rear main seal :notsure: i estimate 70% roughly highway miles so i don't do a whole lot of shifting gears unless stop and go traffic

    Rear main seals don’t go out to often, but if one did it will cost you 800.00 for a 20.00 part and probably destroy the clutch too
    I did have one fail on my Tahoe and cost me 1000.00 on the automatic

    Typically the clutch will last 250,000 miles or so

    OME 884, 5100s, Wheeler's 1.5" Progressive AAL, Firestone Ride Rite, Fisher Homesteader 7'4" Plow, Heated Seats, Viper 5806v Remote Start / Alarm.
    When I still had my '98 I had the clutch done at a transmission shop in New Jersey and it was about $800. That was in 2011.

    World of difference after it was done. $2k seems high even with OEM parts.

    last time i needed or paid for a clutch job was in 1991 :bananadead: don't recall the cost on that but was a lot for a teenager then lol
    iiirc the old car i had gotten used from a 'woman' driver only had maybe 80k miles on it and it started slipping

    Oh Lord I hated doing my headers. Now they I have better tools and the experience it wouldn't be so bad though

    I paid $725. Work was done by a tire shop in South Texas. I couldn't tell you whether or not OEM parts were used....probably not.
