    No you're not.

I remember my starter being easy to get out. Think I pulled it out the back.

Yes, it needs to be removed. Mines had a slow leak for years, it wasn't enough to cause any issues so I figured I'd leave it till I eventually had to remove the diff.

i am putting it to the test currently on a weathered front suspension
blurry picture of product ,needs air compressor to spray
also putting it head 2 head with the FF in a rattle can
this will be a most fun and interesting experiment (hopefully)

@Kwikvette, does this look like a winner?
you may even want to put this on your Tacoma to make it look real good

Looks can be deceiving. With 2wd models, it's no problem getting the starter out from below. But, it's pretty common knowledge that the 4wd models aren't as easy. If it was as simple as taking the starter out from underneath, I think people would be doing it. I'm talking more from experience with 3rd Gen 4runners and maybe 1st Gen Tacomas are slightly different and afford more room. If somebody wants to show me on their 4wd 1st Gen Tacoma how they easily got it out from below, I'll be a believer.

I think the 5 speed Tacoma is pretty easy from getting it from the underside,

That really blows dude, I hope you can find a rear quarter and save the 4runner. It looks great outside of the corner.

Also can you believe the difference in damage to the chevy? That fender is gone. Just another credit to old toyotas. Very strong metal on our trucks.

I think same but it’s been a while. Had it out a bunch back in my puddle smashing days. Rebuilt the contacts too. I definitely never loosened a brake line bracket. But also a manual 4wd with no sway bar. That auto in the video looked like it had way more shit in the way.

That's a huge bummer! Doesn't look too bad tho, good excuse for a new plate bumper! Replace the tail light, paint over the damage to prevent rust and call it good. Battle scars!

The multitude of rusted out Tacos would disagree with that last statement.

Last time I did it, with Mike on the Red head it came out the bottom too. Going out the wheel well was too hard to get an angle on

Then I guess I'll have to agree to disagree with them.

I second this, you can pull the starter out from the underside on a 5speed truck cause there’s no auto trans dipstick tube in the way. If you pulled the dipstick tube and trans pan, you could pull the starter out the bottom

Yeah, my experience on 3rd Gen 4runners has been with 4wd models with automatic transmissions.

Now, with a set of headers on that might be different tho.
I will have to wait and see to cross that road.

the tech I apprenticed under used to tell me horror stories about removing starters to do starter contacts on 3.4’s with TRD headers back in the day. I definitely took that into consideration, luckily I’d done contacts the year before, so all I did was inspect them and put it together

as I said they were just stories, I never had to experience it. From a glance it looked like a major PITA.
