Airing down prevents digging in... or gets a stuck vehicle out on its own power (just clear away sand from tires and differential, undersides.

Mud terrains, A/Ts with 3-ply sidewalls, (the worst tires for sand) need to be at 10 psi or less.

Other A/Ts around 15 psi, depending on the tire. 20-32 psi may work, but you are probably spinning more than moving forward, and heating up your engine. It depends on the sand, heat, humidity, moisture. I was able to drive on dry beach sand in the winter with TRAC on at 32 psi... 6 mos. later (summer), same beach, no way.

Pump back up once off the sand. Do not brake hard, accelerate hard, or turn sharp while deflated.

personally, I'll stay at 20 psi. I'd rather need to have someone pull me out, than be stuck with a tire off the rim. (it's happened to me 2x @ pismo). Not going below 20 anymore!

I'm sure there were 4x4s stuck out there in the Dunes...it was pretty scary out there at times. The sand there was very soft.
