hi point

Thinking of getting a hi point 9mm for my first hand gun. Anyone have any experience with this gun?

 

High Points are garbage. Look at a Sig, Glock, XD, M&P or my favorite, H&K.

 

Have a wife and kid. Can't afford $500 plus for a gun. All the reviews i have seen online are good.

 

I would go for a used gun from the above brands. I know money can be tight, but I want something that I know will fire and cycle every time. Not to sound like a financial adviser, but maybe hold off for a month or two and get a better quality pistol. Just my two cents.

 

I've had limited experience with a buddy's 9mm carbine model. He's had no issues that I'm aware of other than it's ugly as sin.

 

+1 on the waiting... it's tough not to get a hardon for an upgrade. Besides, even a new Kel-Tec 9mm goes for $325... and it's an accepable carry gun if you decide to go that route.

 

My step dad bought a HP 380...we've taken it out several times and never had any issues...he bought it for home protection mainly. We've probably shot 150 rds through it

But to the OP...I'm a Glock guy myself...I own a 23C and love it.

 

As one of the largest firearms dealer in the country, I feel that I must interject that the Hi Points are more than adequate as a utility grade firearm.

The return and repair rate on the Hi Points I sell are virtually ZERO. Malfunctions are generally attributed to operator.

Be sure and break the gun in with at least 100 rounds of ball ammo before you intend to use it for protection. The Hi Point may be problematic with some blunt nosed hollow point ammunition. With standard full metal jacket, they will pretty much work forever.

I've got a HP 9mm. I've put probably 3-400 rounds of FMJ through it over the years. The only problems that I've had was due to a bad magazine causing it to jam. I know it's not a high end gun and I'd like to have a nicer pistol but for now it'll have to do.

 

Shot my pals 9mm carbine as well. No problems although it did need some deburring. i agree, ugly as hell but shot nice.
Pistols on the other hand....save your money.

 

Agreed. My friend's father bought one chambered in .45 ACP. two mags through it and the barrel blew apart. The whole lower end of the gun was shattered. missed his hand by about a half an inch. Spend a little more on a used gun. Just my opinion.

 

I think alot of the problems like the jennings are due to limp wristing. Albiet I'm sure hi-point does not use the quality control/tolerances of higher grade manufacturers.

 

Your experience is appreciated by OP and the rest of us. But montgom. please wait and save some money for a quality firearm. .380 might be a good choice because of the price. I waited and bought my first Glock, and will only buy glocks. My first one was in the dirt/water/mud/sand... you name it and fired every time and still does. A group of friends never cleaned one of our guns... mine was glock, one was HK, S&W etc. There was 6 of us and my glock never jammed..nonscientific sure but IDGAS...I'm glock for life. Moreover if your situation allows it, no external safety on the glock is nice. Heck buy a used one, just not from a pawn shop. Also shop around..in my area there is a 80$ price difference between shops.

Hi Points are crap. We did however give one to a friend for his wedding present.

 

I would also look used, some great deals can be found.
