I have been away from this site for while, but i really need to upgrade the stereo and could use some advice on what I should install, this site has always had great ideas.

I have a 2005 DCLB the OEM head unit almost dies on me every summer, so I am about to pull the trigger on a Kenwood DNX996XR in Dash NAV Unit.

I want wireless CarPlay, but also need a headhunt with NAV when I am up north and my phone does not have cell service.

The unit has so much stuff like up to 3 cameras and optional dash cams. I was just wondering if there are any things I should watch out for when I install this or options I should consider while I have everything apart?

I also always wanted a rear backup camera; the 2005 never came with one, will the OEM camera and parts for later models fit on this truck and attach to the kenwood?

Like I said I have been away, so any advice to help me get back up to speed on what's possible would be aprectiated, the 2005 is still going string and I see myself getting a lot more use out of it, so the upgrades would be worth it.

I would definitely make sure the nav has lifetime map updates. I know some models do advertise that it has garmin with the lifetime updates

I used CameraSource https://camera-source.com/automotiv...a-backup-camera-for-aftermarket-monitors.html to obtain a superCMOS camera that fit into a later model tailgate handle. You can also use a Pop & Lock tailgate handle that supports a camera (also available on the camera source webpage as a kit).

I have an extra OEM camera (just the camera and short lead with Scosche plug connector) and Pop & Lock.
I decided to use the aftermarket camera in an OEM handle -- just my preference. Which is why I have the other set available. Pop and Lock was never used, not sure I ever even installed it.

Yes, if that hits your interest I might be willing to trade/sell one or both. If you are using a MAESTRO TO1 harness and Rr controller, they have a lead that connects to the OEM harness to the camera -- which you would have to figure out the rest. Whichever works best for you, the aftermarket cameras are easier to integrate, just 12vDC power, ground and video leads to connect.

Better to use car play and an app like maps.me for when you don’t have cell phone service. GPS works if you download the map.
