That video with rusty white chevy is bullshit. Ziebart coating is sprayed on and flat mat black. The product is the video was brushed on , uneven and glossy finish.

Was probably applied over existing rust too. I think thats why rubberized coatings get so much hate. I know few people that had great results when applied on new vehicle.

It only takes one chip or gap in rubberized or bedliner coating to let water/rust over time propagate under the coating. It's not an active barrier so rust just jacks the coating and moves along to fresh metal. It's at that time that you end up with voids where the rust has jacked the coating off the substrate that never truly dry out in winter.

It's the equivalent of shitting you pants and just putting on a fresh pair without wiping your ass. It may look "ok" for a while but it's in there.

3M Cavity Wax, Wayoyl and Fluid Film offer active protection vs. rubberized bullshit

Idk if anyone read the part of my post that said I HAD rubberized undercoat applied a few days after driving the vehicle off the lot.

I would have went the Fluid Film/Krown route if I had done my research. Everyone telling me to go with those products or none at all is useless BECAUSE I already had it Ziebarted.

I'm going to do some touch ups and regularly check, maintain, as well as get the yearly touch up inspections in hope that I can prevent rust and moisture build up.

Thank you.. whatever they did to that truck in the video was terribly done. Makes me wonder a few things...

Did they prep and clean the whole underside before doing it?
Did they use a brush?! Cause like you said it's like glopped on everything and mine looks NOTHING like that.
Did he maintain it or did he get it done and forget about it?

I know he said he got it done when the vehicle was brand new but I really think that was applied over rust..

If they salt the roads where you live - coat as you must, but no matter what if at all possible at least once a week blast the undercarriage really well with water, then blast it again. It's the salt that kills not the wet alone.

This video? It's by South Main Auto, a good repair channel from shop owner Eric O. in upstate NY. Effectively he's on the receiving end of vehicles with rubberized undercoating gooped over electrical and fluid connectors preventing access. Apparently Ziebart was applied yearly on this truck, so layer upon layer until a thick shell is built up:

Last month he posted a 4th gen 4Runner heading to the crusher because it developed frame perforations:

Remember time is money at most shops, so expect no cleaning and spray gun application. In your case expect the undercoating to crack after about 3 years. Scraping / wirebrushing the coating off is impractical as the goop just gums up every tool and rotary attachment. It's best to just treat it as if it didn't exist - spray with Fluid Film before each winter. If large chunks of the coating bubbles up, you can remove them with a scraper.

My Tundra had that rubberized crap on the frame when I bought it. A lot of effort and methylene chloride got that gunk off. And yeah, just trying to use a wire wheel or grinding disc first didn't work out after about five seconds.

do you have pics of what that looks like under your truck?
i have been trying to apply this CF 3000 formula to a 2nd gen that may have the vulcanized rubber coating on from '11
its not wanting to 'creep' very well as this undercoating is not a metal surface i guess
already its starting to peel in a few spots and rusting at a mere 42k miles on the western fringes of the rusty belt
mostly by the cats and perhaps in the spare tire area in spots

You could always supplement with a good soaking of salt-away. Look it up. I put it in a garden sprayer and just soak everything underneath when the temp gets high enough.

Supposed to neutralize the corrosive effects of salt and brine.

This is in addition to my woolwax annual undercoating.

Probably won’t have the truck long enough for it to matter but just in case I do... gonna do all I can to make it last.

Did mine as well before it came off the lot. I also do Krown once a year and crawl under it with a couple of rattle cans every summer for peace of mind touch ups.

Mine so far looks good and I am on my third winter. Saw another local 2017 that had nothing done and the under body looked like I had 10 years of rust on it already.

I, like you, did the same. I got the undercoat and didn't do my normal research. :anonymous: There us hope though! I did some removal research. A propane torch and scraper was one method. The more appealing method to save time is with an air chisel. Both methods will leave some residual, but goo gone works damn good. Youtube it and you maybe consider. I will more than likely be removing it. Especially from the frame.

Its a very thin layer, its not tacky when you touch it, looks to be quite durable. It was done by diamond kote when my truck was brand new and this stuff is vulcanized rubber. It is an active coating. We will see how it holds up.

Is ziebart asphalt/tar based or is it vulcanized rubber? Cuz those 2 are quite different.

    You got pics of it?
