Brake Upgrade: StopTech Rotors + TRD Performance Pads

I really hate to break it to you, but you’ll need to redo it to appropriately bed the pads. You defeat the point of heating them up enough to achieve rapid break in if you let them cool down in between. The instructions specifically state it is to be done in immediate succession. You might just go for the extended break in at this point.

Problem was underestimating the amount of distance needed and how long it takes me to get back up to speed with all the weight on the truck.

I mean I may have been raised by a third world family but I do know how to read and follow instructions.

and I still haven't gotten any sleep.

no worries haha! Yeah I figured they should be really good to go. I inspected the rotors and everything "looks good".

after the last attempt I drove around for a while to let everything cool down, which wasn't too hard considering it was in the 30's.

I did get a chance to test them out when someone pulled out in front of me early this evening. Good stopping power now!

I still plan to baby them for about another 125 miles or so (already put about 80 on them) just for additional caution, avoid rapid stops if I can help it. Atleast I have peace of mind especially considering I take my son to daycare.

Rears need to be done next not sure I want to take that on.

 

Well shit. I did 1 60-10 every night on my way home from the gym mixed with 100 miles of daily driving.....

 

After 500 miles on the StopTech 340mm ST60 BBK, I'm not very impressed for the money. The pads should be appropriately bedded by now and stopping has improved since initial install but I think the TRD Performance ceramic pads offer better initial bite than the StopTech Street ceramic pads. I'm swapping the Street pads out for more aggressive StopTech Sport semi-metallic pads.

The TRD Pads are definitely true to form beefy pads of safety. Last night and today I had two instances where people making a left turn on a green (yield) light fail to yield to straight through traffic. These pads have already done their jobs. I am thankful that I bedded them over the weekend.

Stupid amounts of trips shuttling the kid too and from the grandparents house out in Sultan, drove it round trip 4x last weekend, which is good for about 200 miles.

 

Different pads can help with the feel, but the real gains, as you likely know, will be in fade resistance when things get hot and heavy.

 

Meanwhile mine are still a little squishy I just need to call around and find someone with the proper machine to bleed the shit outta it.

 

If getting them professionally done, you might as well get the system flushed and replaced with all new fluid, which should be done every few years anyway. And if doing that, you might consider upgrading the fluid from DOT3 to DOT4 which are compatible and DOT4 has a higher boiling point meaning greater resistance to fade. DOT4 also does not absorb water as readily.

DOT5.1 is also compatible and has the highest boiling point, not to be confused with DOT5 which is not compatible and should not be used. But while using DOT4 in a DOT3 application is relatively common, I haven't seen a lot of DOT5.1 use.

 

Now that I dealt with my debacle we could do the dry bleed with the motive. That seemed to work out very well. Not as messy as the wet way.

 

My brakes are stupid responsive now. I love it and cant wait for my rear SS brake lines that I havent ordered yet

 

Still riding on mine. Damn do those TRD pads bite hard.

I had to throw some fresh paint on the rear drums too after that break in procedure burnt it off

 

Here is a great write up, with data!, showing how Stoptech's big brakes for armored Toyota Land Cruisers perform on the job. I find it interesting that the rear discs are the source/starting point for the fade. Throws some cold water on the Tacoma rear drum brakes are up to the task debate.

Very interesting. Though not really an apples to apples to apples comparison, as the armored LC used in those tests is rear weight biased, being heavier in the rear than front. Where as the Tacoma has almost no weight in the rear. I like the testing though, it would be interesting to see something similar on a pickup.

So I started to get a squeel....think I didn't grease the back plates right....that a Napa is filled with very knowledgeable people....I found these? Thoughts

(Also checked and no rocks or metal or grinding)

Cleaned off old grease



The noise happens during low or slow gradual stops less then a few mph. Everywhere I read says grease or debris problem.
