You can bend the dust covers. I have spindle gussets and had to push my dust covers back everywhere it made contact. Pretty easy to do. I would run them as they really help with cooling and keeping stuff out of your brakes.

Thanks for the answer, looking at em, bending may not be enough, I’ll probably have to cut some out, the maxtracs have weird angles. But yeah for sure they do help with cooling. I couldn’t find parts truck to get a used set anywhere, new was $119 shipped, bummer they’ll have to be cut.

Not sure which Tundra Brakes folks were talking about, but I have an 02 Tundra with the factory TSB for the larger 1st gen brakes and I am running those exact rims on my Tundra. Not sure if that helps, but they will clear the larger 1st Gen Tundra Disc stuff.

"Girl transmission"... Funny joke. I quit watching the video right after the pointlessly sexist comment.

I know lots of girls who drive manual. But I know even more guys who think it's somehow cool to tell me about how they drive a manual. I just don't get it, it's not some special skill.

I did this upgrade on my 2nd gen with the "Girlie Transmission". but I was manly enough to not break the hard line and I took the extra manly step of replacing with larger dust shields.

@craigFLA great post! If I am quoting you correctly you managed to considerably improve the breaking performance at 25% the cost of a ~$2K "big break package for my Gen 2 Tacoma. And, if I purchase the following list of Toyota or equivalent parts I can do the same.

The thing that is so astounding is I can essentially do the same work as if I were doing a comprehensive brake job (with Tacoma factory parts) but if I use a much improved bill of materials (BOM) I can likely get the same results you are experiencing. The improved BOM would include:

    - 338mm OD (13.30 inch dia) and 28mm thick rotors (which accept the 231mm pads from 2003-2009 Lexus GX470 selected for a 2003-2009 4runner.) These rotors are Part# 43512-60151 $57.20 EA purchased on Ebay from Toyota Tampa Bay and that match 13WH calipers.
    - a set of new larger diameter backing plates from a Toyota OE dust covers for a 2006 4-runner Sport with 17" wheels.
    - (Toyota) Lexus equivalent NAPA Eclipse calipers (WH cast in black) - L caliper (part#SE3318) R caliper (SE3317) $78.30 EA + $50 EA core.
    - OE Pads & Shims (purchased online from ToyotaPartsDeal.com) Pads (part#04465-35290) $62.13 and Shim kit (part #04945-35120) $41.14.
    - Toyota 4-runner Dust Covers (also purchased from ToyotaPartsDeal.com) part#s 47781-60120 & 47782-60120 $62.16 EA.
    - A can of hightemp caliper black paint to clean and paint my current OE wheel bearing hubs to new OE dust covers.
    - A set of front SS brake-lines (identical in length to what I have now with slightl modification to the hard brake line to fit the new calipers)

At a minimum, the results would include:
    - a noticeable difference in stopping power
    - OE (inexpensive/readily available) parts and still have dust/backing plates
    - Improved heat dissipation

I clearly understand that any choice of wheels that I decide on I would need to my own research to determine if their wheels will allow for the larger rotors and calipers. I plan on measuring but I'm running 18" wheels now but I'm more concerned with whether the barrells are deep enough than the wheel diameter. Great Job and Thanks again!

The OP I believe checked out of TW years ago. So I dont thnk you will get a response. I ran this setup exactly as described on my 2nd gen Sport. I had a bad caliper and bearing and decided to do the upgrade using the same parts. Stopping was at a ton better than stock and Was @$400. I highly recommend this avenue when I see all the hoopla about Stopteck, big slotted rotor and other wastes of money.

Thanks for the headsup @Koolbreeze7. I appreciate hearing others have taken this route with good results. I can't think of a mod that I will get more benefit from than improved brakes . If you had any other words of wisdom concerning this upgrade I'm all ears!

It's pretty straight forward. Just be careful with the hard brake lines when removing. The only PIA is having to remove the wheel bearing to replace the dust covers. I had a bad bearing so they had to come off anyway. Bleeding the brakes wasnt even bad. I only had to loosen the bleeder nut and pump pedal a few times. I am looking forward to doing this again on this truck. LMK, if you have any specific questions.

Did you run this set up with 17" rims? I am strongly considering doing this upgrade, I currently am running the EBC 6000 series "Green Stuff" kit and recently on a trip to CO I was loaded down heavy with camping gear and the brakes were fading bigtime (on 265s as well)... and I am not one to ride the brakes mountain highways. If the claim is anywhere near true that the performance is that much better, then it'll be a no brainer.

**Don't get me wrong, the EBC kit is definitely an upgrade over stock. Made a huge difference towing my old Mastercraft with a trailer that has no brakes.**

I had the stock 17" Sport wheels. I towed my 21' SeaRay ( w / trailer brakes) with the old brakes on the road, and while careful never noticed a serious issue. Unfortunately I never towed it with the Big brake setup beyond moving it from my house to warehouse which was about three miles in town to compare. So my towing experience is limited. When you have other issues needing maintenance ie. bearings, stuck caliper, , as I had, a complete OEM upgrade for me was a no brainer, especially considering the cost. Like I mentioned before, at the first sign of needing replacement, I will do this upgrade to my 3rd Gen pictured in my avatar.

@Captainskidmark I have done this upgrade with the dust shields. I have noticed a decent improvement in braking. Make sure your rear drums are adjusted properly. With the stock brakes I have noticed how the rear drums are out of adjustment the braking performance lacks. Noticed mostly on down hill grades. I am running 17" method roost wheels with plenty of clearance for the calipers. I don't think the 16" pro comp wheels I had would have cleared. But I did not check.
EBC makes some good stuff. I ran their 9000 yellow stuff on a x-runner I had. it had 11" rotors. lol! Those pads and rotors from EBC made a huge difference on that x-runner.
I would recommend to get good quality pads and rotors when you do this upgrade. for the calipers Look at rockauto for some pricing and make sure your calipers are coated to protect from rust. I failed to notice that. I assumed all calipers were coated. lol!
