Wouldn’t the burden of proof be on those claiming that there are horsepower gains to be had by upgrading the exhaust?

the proof is in the hundred reviews of aftermarket exhaust on this website. “Sounds throatier, no noticeable power gains”

Any reason why you didn't replace the whole exhaust system?

Do you have any CAI installed on your truck?

Because I don’t want to spend $$$$$$$$$ on an exhaust for my truck that I beat up offroad. Catback makes no sense as far as financial investment and functional gains in the real world especially on a tacoma. I made my own SRI after chopping my fenders and pulling my fender liners. It hasn’t seemed to have any affect on performance or mileage and it’s been bone dry after heavy water fording. I blocked off the hole in the fender well with plastic and drilled a few small holes so a little bit of air flow still gets to the engine bay where the filter is. My intake also cost me about $40

My truck came with a MRBP dual exhaust. It was OK, it rotted out. So i replaced it with a Gibson cat back system. IMO, it sounds great with the 4.0 motor. Amazon had them on sale a while back for something like $275 with free shipping. This was for the full stainless model, so i jumped on that. Took me about an hour to cut the old one off the truck and install the new one. I definitely recommend the Gibson system, but sound and looks are so subjective, so still just my opinion.

Nice truck! I like the way you did there on your air intake. Would you mind sharing the brand name and model of that intake? Thanks!

I chopped the big bulky resonator off the intake tubing right where the tubing is just a simple cylinder. Then I bought a “SPECTRE” air filter from autozone and ordered a “SPECTRE mesh screen cover” from Amazon or eBay to cover it to help reduce dust / water on the filter. That’s it. Just sawed off the big head of the intake and attached a filter. And I removed the factory filter because I don’t need 2 filters.

Thank you for the compliment also. This is the filter I used though the exact model I used was more stubby than this. Spectre Performance 8132 Universal Clamp-On Air Filter: Round Tapered; 3 in/3.5 in/4 in (102 mm/89 mm/76 mm) Flange ID; 6.719 in (171 mm) Height; 6 in (152 mm) Base; 4.75 in (121 mm) Top https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00062ZGO2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_YA-5DbP39ARGM

I use an Ultragauge & monitor temps and real-time MPG and IAT & all kinda of vitals & my janky DIY intake solution has been fine even in super super hot AZ temps with 35’s and stock gearing LOL. (4:88 are next though)

I have a K&N hot air intake pair with a mbrp fart cannon. Paired together they sound good. If I only had to get one it would be an intake. Makes the exhaust note a little deeper. However, I would only consider an enclosed intake such as an AFE or Volant. Which I'll be switching too eventually. I think my truck sounds pretty good, dont let the old farts tell you otherwise. Besides, how else would people know you're 17 if your trucks not loud as all hell taking off from the stop light.... :burnrubber:IM SEVENTEEEEENNNNN

I think us 'old farts' are just trying to give some advice based on our personal experience. Not trying to tell you not to modify one's truck.
If I found mods that actually delivered what they promised, I'd get my credit card out and start ordering right now.
l loved swapping intake manifolds, carbs, putting new spring and weights to recurve my distributor, headers with mandrel bent dual exhaust. Cam swaps. etc etc.Uhhhhh the good 'old' days. But far to often today the performance delivered isn't what is promised. Great Sound! I'm all for it. But so many systems sound obnoxious to even the driver. The thought of spending money for no performance gain, and to just get annoyed doesn't sound great to me.
But, mods that sound good (even if a bit loud) and deliver. I'm all for:thumbsup:

Would an aftermarket drop-in filter and exhaust system just as good than aftermarket air intake and exhaust system?

We've got the magnaflow exhaust on our truck and it sounds pretty good. Not to loud either.

I know that the size of factory exhaust system for 2nd gen. is about 2.3-5.

Does using a 3.0 diameter size of aftermarket exhaust pipe would it make any difference at all?

Tube sizing different only affects boosted cars. I know for a fact it changes turbocharged vehicles, not sure on supercharged. To an N/A motor it makes no difference

With 3 inches, you’ll probably end up losing low end torque on a naturally aspirated motor of this size. I wouldn’t go anymore then 2.5 inch pipe.

There is no lack of low end torque with the Magnaflow and 3 inch pipe. They actually make a dual 2.5 that exits behind both wheels. Not sure if any real gains can be made unless you also change the intake and then tune for the flow change. I don't have the equipment anymore to be able to do any real testing. Honestly I think the TRD exhaust is probably the best overall bet if you can get it.
I do like the way this sounds when the throttle is kissing the floor though. :D
