My 2017 Sport has stock tires and the speedo shows 3mph faster than i’m traveling. I see no need bothering with it as it’s a buffer that just might save me a ticket or two. Your results may vary.

Just lifted my 2019 Limited and jumped 2" on tire size; from 265/60/18 to 265/70/18. Before the lift I checked the speedo to the GPS on my dash cam and on my phone- found the error to be less than +/- 1 mph depending on which device I referenced. On the way home from the tire store I rechecked expecting to see the speedo running 10% under but I found the speedometer to be spot on and the error to be exactly the same between 30 and 50 mph. When I got home I called the tire shop and asked them if they calibrated it somehow and they said no. Took it out on the highway and had to get above 75 to to see a 2 mph difference. At 81 on the speedometer it was rolling between 83 and 84 on the GPS.

I am also putting 4.88's in and am wondering about the speedo. The other comments say that gears don't matter. Is this confirmed? And does that mean the vehicle speed is read at the wheel?

Thank you! I've been trying to find the answer for a couple days! that's one less thing to worry about before the 4.88s next month

Speedometers aren't generally super accurate in a passenger vehicle and are subject to all kinds of factors from tire pressure to wear to load range... even two identically sized tires aren't going to have the same circumference or revs/mile as another brand.

Even at 80mph with theoretically identical tires (other than size), you should only expect 5mph difference but since I'll assume you have two different kinds of tires, it's likely other factors come into play.

Newbie here. I have been lurking for about a month. Bought a 2019 DCSB OR 4x4. I like to go threw everything head unit, owners manual, etc.
I was going threw the head unit and found a setting that says tire recalibration. I do not know what it does or how it works but I have definitely seen it?

I work for Hypertech as Creative Director. 3rd gen Tacomas need the INLINE SPEEDOMETER CALIBRATOR (PN730123), not the Max Energy Speedometer Calibrator. I believe we go up to 2018. We have not officially released the Inline for the 2019-2020, but I'm sure it's in the works. I have a 19 TRD Off-Road lifted and my speedo is off maybe 2mph. At some point I may put an Inline on it.

I installed the rough country version in my 19'. I know its only supposed to work up to the 18' I believe. I haven't verified if its actually working as intended yet. Setup and install was super easy though.

I don't know how that is possible. Maybe wheel rotation is measured which is calibrated to OEM tire size, but there is no way the speedometer sensing unit can know how big the tires are and calculate the the distance per rotation and extrapolate that to accurate MPH. Just look at the tire calculator here and you can see different tire sizes produce different speedometer readings. So if installing 33"s this can be somewhat compensated for by changing gears.

I didn’t say, and he didn’t ask, that putting bigger tires on wouldn’t change his speedometer. Gears won’t change anything, it’s measured at the wheel. I agree that wheel rotation is calibrated to stock size.

I think you misread his question.

I have the rough country inline Speedo kit & used the Hypertech software off their website and it works like a champ. No issues so far, no errors, easy to install

After installing 285/75R16 tires, I checked at cruise set to 70 mph then checked speed with an app on my phone. Phone said 72 mph.
Doesn't seem like enough to worry about. But I didn't check it with the stock tires first, it may have been a little off the other way.

For what it's worth, i just went from 265/70r16 to 265/70r17, increasing size/speed etc by 3.3%. I wasn't planning on re calibrating; however, I run a shift sense pro, which uses speed to determine shift points and the 1.5-3mph difference is very noticeable. While i thought level 2 was perfect for me before, it's a bit too aggressive now, so I changed it down to level 1 and think that leaves me doggy and gear hunting a bit more like stock...

just contacted them yesterday about this for my 2019 tacoma. Here we are about 2 years in of having 2019's out on the road and there's still no option to correct a speedometer. this is insane, i guess thats what we should expect buying these new computerized vehicles these days. its still insane to me that the dealer doesn't even have an option to correct this lol.
