Self sealing, all I did was cut off the end of the nipple that was on the end of the plug..

    EDIT:

I always like using the semi prebuilt white Teflon coated coax by Laird, the Teflon coating makes it extremely easy for pulling through tight spaces.

BTW 50.125 Thursday nights at 8pm if you're around. They've revived a pretty good 6m gathering

Studying for my technician license right now. I've had the book for five years but never picked it up. I figured I just bought a new truck and need a whip antenna hanging off it so why not get my license and start using it? I also live in a remote part of Utah near Moab and I'd like to communicate with my neighbors a little better and this is the most unreasonable option so I am doing it. One neighbor is an examiner already.

What do you guys use your radios for? Data transmission? Voice? General nerding out?

Looking at radios already. Wondering if starting with something like the Icom 2730 is best to play with voice only or getting a higher end radio that will do packet transmission is worth while. Seems like the Kenwood D710 is quite popular and comes with GPS, APRS, and internal TNC. I like data.

I don't plan to buy a radio every year. If I have to spend twice the money up front and not buy another for years, I'd rather do that.

    Opinions?

Its difficult for us to anticipate what might or might not interest you in the future. The TM-D710G is a fantastic radio, that will serve you well. I like the looks of the Icom 2730. The only thing that irritates me is the lack of a mini-din port on the back. I'd suggest the TM-V71A over the 2730 for that reason. You add a TNC such as the Mobilnkd to the TM-V71A later to add APRS later. Or you can use a signalink and use other digital modes. The 2730 makes this much more complicated.

The FTM-400 seems popular with Tacoma owners.

There's so many choices when you're starting out. I run a TM-V71a as does @m603holden I believe. As K8md noted, you can add APRS to run externally. If you want digital to run right out of the box, I'd look closely at what protocol repeaters you have in your area and select off of that.
