K&N air filters?

Hey I was just wondering if any of you guys know if changing to a K&N filter on my new truck will cause any problems? I dont want to do a whole kit and I was just thinking about putting a drop in filter in. I have heard that some people have had problems with their mass air flow sensor.

If no one else has heard of these problems wil a K&N give me any other benifits other than I wont have to by any new filters?

honestly, i think the best benefit will probably be the fact that you wont have to change your filter again. just always remember to not over oil it, which in some cases(mostly on the cai) has fouled the maf sensor and it has to be cleaned on occasion. not really sure of any performance gains, maybe a bit better gas mileage though.

 

Thought of another question. Does a K&N filter let more or less dirt through into the engine?

it actually could let more in, but if you keep it cleaned and oiled regularly(not every 50k miles like the box says......i say at least once a month)), it shouldnt be too much of a problem i wouldnt think.

 

I put one on my R100R BMW twin opposed and never looked back.
The dealer recommended it and sold it.
I also opened up the exhaust flow. Per dealer. I cannot use the HP,I can feel 20% but the milage went way up.And the noise did not increase much. If you stay off the throttle your CA neighbors won`t mind. I can blow open springs with dynamite here in WI and Harleys run straight pipes. They go by, I do not mind.
The jury is out on the War Wagon. Time will tell.

 

I had a K&N drop in on my 98 Taco and it def messed up my MAF. I don't see myself buying another K&N.

 

K&N never messed anything up on my vehicles in the past, but there was definitely more grime in the intake tubing with the K&N than there was with a regular filter.

I am testing an AFE Drop-In Air Filter right now...

 

Hows that going by the way? Any problems?

 

I like it so far. I notice a small increase in fuel economy, but that isn't compensating for how much more I want to stomp on the accelerator.

 

Mark, The AFE is a wet oil gauze type like the K&N is it not? I may be mis-remembering, if so what prompted you to choose the AFE over the K&N? Trying to pick a drop in myself, hence the reason for the question. I think I'd really like an amsoil, but they don't seem to be producing drop-ins for the gen 2 tacos.

 

I wanted to see if the AFE passed as much junk (oil and dirt) as the K&Ns do. So far, they don't. I think the K&Ns are just thinner and have more oil on them originally. I am going to take the AFE out again today and take a look at my intake tube to see if there is any junk on the inside. If there is, you can bet that I will be going back to the OE paper filter. I will let you know more when I get home.

 

Well, I took off the AFE filter and brushed my finger against the inner tubing on the intake just before the MAF sensor - NO RESIDUE!!!

Looks like I will be keeping the AFE Drop-In Filter.

You can actually see the difference in the picture below between clean and not so clean!

I doubt it, at least you can understand the Col. while ghostsix just writes incoherent babble.

 

John Wayne built the first one that I know of by that name. He is dead.
So build what you like and call it a APC for all I care.

 

Perhaps the ghost/col. suffers from MPD (multiple personality disorder.) No, that's not it, I am quite sure that it is the same blather from both of them, (read as someone with too much time on their hands trying to get the rise out of someone just like I am giving him now) and there's a striking similarity between their trucks too. In-fact, if you are able, TCbob, or 007, I am sure if you checked the IP that each of them log in from you will find it to be the same. Call it a gut feeling. Anything that either of those handles post is pointless drivel, and totally de-rails the thread it is posted on. Ok, off my soap box now.

 

+1.. don't expect it to feel much different, but you'll never have to buy a filter again!

 

I had my truck in to the dealership today for an oil change.They called for approval to install a new air filter and I told them not to bother....I was thinking K&N because I had them on my motorcycles and had good luck.I found this thread and my understanding is that with a stock airbox:

Little better fuel mileage,small power gain,no issue if oiled and cleaned properly and infinite re-useability....Agreed?

I'm going to price one up.
