The first mod to my truck were my rock sliders. I knew how difficult rockers are to repair and how easy they are to knock on a rock no matter how light of a trail you're on. Anyway, a couple weeks after I installed the sliders, we decided to take a trip up to Big Bear to snowboard. It's snowing like crazy, and blowing sideways, can't see much and they've already closed 2 of the 3 ways up the mountain. They're checking for chains on vehicles so the only way up is at a dead stop for 2+ hours as we wait to get past the check point.

I have google maps turned on to try and get a good ETA of when we're going to get into town, it's me my Girl, and our two golden retrievers in the cab. As we're sitting there waiting the google maps does some updating and reroutes us to a road that seems like it came out of nowhere but it immediately to my right. It's a dirt road, and no one else is taking it because obviously they don't have Tacomas. but this was going to allegedly save us 1.5 hours and if google suggested it i figured it couldn't be that bad of a route. we were on the 18 and it suggested we take smarts ranch road (see the attached picture). What i haven't mentioned yet is why the other two routes to big bear were closed... mudslides from lots of rain several days earlier. the bridges and a couple curves were totally washed out on the other two routes.

So... I naturally decide to take google's suggestion at 11pm while it's snowing like crazy and we've got maybe 20ft of visibility.

Start heading down the road and it's not to bad, just a wide, well graded dirt road with some dusting of snow on top. Then we pass one spot that's washed out from the aforementioned rain, but it's flat so no biggie. Then another... and another... then the OHV staging area.... then another washed out spot, but this one has some big ol rocks in it and a couple boulders i had to navigate around.

Then it cuts uphill on cactus rd. at this point, it's a washed out 2 track on the side of a cliff with darkness and the tops of pine trees the only thing we can see on the other side. At this point it's rough going for my mostly stock truck and we're taking it slow but crawling over some stuff that I had no business going over.

Right before the smart spring spot I had to cut hard toward the cliff side of the trail because of how narrow it was getting and got up on a big rock that was stable but narrow. I had to back up and approach at t a different angle, and that's when my truck slid off of it, the rock popped up over the slider, and mangled my two driver's side doors as seen in this picture.

At this point i was pissed and determined to make it through so we kept moving. we came around the curve right at smart spring and couldn't see the road any more. I got out of the truck and walked ahead, and the reason we couldn't see it was because it was gone. Looking down it was all bog rocks and blackness, the trail was completely washed out here and there was a gap in the road of about 10 ft.

So, with my gf as my spotter and a couple anxious goldens we backed down the cliff and scraped a few more rocks before getting back in line on the 18 to wait another 2 hours before we moved again.

I have a video my girlfriend took as the rocks were beating us up and right as we came around the bend but cannot upload as there are far too many 4 letter words in there.

So no shit there I was 1 month old baby....and @ready6delta has his wife message my wife about me getting a break to go offroading (thats how the smart play is made). So we head with a group of NOVA peeps to BALD Mtn and get covered in snow. Granted not the smartest plan for me to drive on 2 hrs of sleep but what the hell.

Fresh set of kings, and ST MAXs. No baby No wife. Lots of snow. I paid dearly 8hrs later as I rolled in to a dead tired wife and crying baby...So I relieved momma of her duties just in time for my son to drop the worlds wettest turd in my arms....but I had these pictures to keep me comfort.

So fast forward 2 years....Baby is a toddler....wife is still the wife.....tells me to get lost for the weekend....so veterans day weekend MURRRRICCCCAAA time to go camping, explore, drink. Granted the truck has gone through a bit of an identity crisis and has reinvented itself almost like the artist formerly known as prince (RIP) Worst part was this other truck kept following me and parking everywhere I parked....Really was pissing me off.IMG_20191110_132954.jpg received_566278987479997.jpg received_1201854103359038.jpg

    IMG_20191111_075412.jpg

But wait....you might be asking...did I get shitted on again?!!?!?!

Well no I didn't.....instead.....I got my 2yr old son telling me how much he missed me....and how much did he miss me??!?!?!?!
