    Thanks, if I was doing it nowadays I’d buy the swag kit, but when I made this swags original kit was just a flat price of 1/4 hr plate. It was pretty flimsy. The last few generations they released look so much stronger.

    the one I have is pretty damn strong. Hasn’t budged in a couple years. Just bought a new ram to replace the original one I bought but the mount is stout

    Thanks! I also got to use my new Milwaukee right angle die grinder and it's my new favorite tool to clean up the weld area. I picked up some 2" roloc discs from Amazon and they work great. Flap discs and purple stripper discs.

    Got some questions that you guys could hopefully help me answer or direct me to the right place if not here. This seemed like the best place I could find on here.

    I am working on a dual swing out bumper for my first gen and i want to put a trailer hitch in it as i tow a lot and I wouldn't be gaining any clearance using the stock one even with a lower profile bumper. The bumper is 4x2 3/16 wall tube, and my best idea for a hitch is to cut a 2.5x2.5 notch in the bottom of the 4x2 tube for the receiver and weld two 1x1x.120 tube supports maybe 6" long directly to the receiver and the bumper on the back side at a 45 (in a triangle) to the receiver and bumper then weld two smaller plate triangles (2x2x.120")? to the top two corners of the receiver again at a 45. All joints will be welded with a 125a Harbor freight flux core welder I bought a few weeks ago. i am no professional with a welder but did probably 75 hours of mig on aluminum in high school for robotics and another 25 on steel.

    The receiver tube I will be using is an adapter for a 2.5" hitch to accept 2" receivers so 2.5x2.5x.250 tube

    Opinions on if this will be strong enough? I would be surprised if there are ever any issues pulling as the pin would have to get pulled through the 4x2 bumper tube to get out the back of the bumper as the pin would be on the back side, but I would be more worried about strength when I am braking etc where it is pushing into the bumper.

    My original plan for the swing out joints will be two 3/4 heims on each side sandwiched with 2 pieces of 1/4 plate on each side so the 3/4 bolt through both heims will be in double shear. The bolt through the heims can theoretically support 20,000 ft lbs on the swing out (over 8,000 lbs at the very end of each swing out arm). The heims are rated to 15,680 lb in tension by McMaster (seems like this is lower than the force it would take to break them so there must be some safety factor built in) so they could support 4000 ft lbs so this would theoretically be the weak point (could hold 1,600 lb a the end of the swing out arm).

    After doing the math it seems very possible that I could get away with putting the hinge bolts in single shear instead of double as it would be easier to build and would still hold over 4,000 lbs at the end of the swing out, still higher than the heims are rated.

    Does anyone have opinions as to if the 3/4 heims would be strong enough for the swing out? (the centers of the heims would be spaced 3.125" apart on the hinge bolt) and if I would be fine putting them in single shear instead of double.

    Thanks for any help, sorry for the wall of text and lack of pictures to show what I am talking about it but hopefully it makes a little sense.

    Here is a pic of a weld I did on one of the 1/4 plate supports to the main tube so maybe you can get an idea of where my welding skills are. Sorry about the uncleaned flux core weld, but I am away from the bumper and can't get better pics for a few days.

    The supports are fully welded around the edges as well now as well and have gussets to support them even better.

    Edit: more than happy to take any suggestions on how to weld better if you have any suggestions looking at this as well

    It all comes down to just what your planning to be dragging around.

    I have something similar a receiver tube welded to 1/4" plate that is just used to tow Engine drive welders at most 2500 pounds .

    Why not go through the center of your 2"x4" tube ?

    I have also used the bolt on receiver tubes welded to a tube bumper they do give you the place to hook safety chains

    Not knowing where you live but putting a pin through a hole and then putting the safety pin in behind something the only way to see is looking up from underneath when your laying in wet sloppy mud or snow gets old fast .

    I had to redesign one such set up the poor women was not happy laying in the mud.

    It would be setup kinda like this:

    The receiver would be surrounded fully by the bumper on 3 sides with the 4th flush with the bottom of the tube. The only thing I really tow with any frequency a 18ft aluminum bass boat (~3000lbs fully loaded) maybe 1,000 miles a year.

    I planned on hooking the safety chains to the two 1x1 tubes on the backside, but after looking at this I might make the hitch stick out a bit from the bumper so I can put the chains on the outside on two tabs like this and that would also help with forces pushing the hitch into the bumper.

    I currently leave my hitch with a locking pin in the receiver about 99% of the time, taking it out only when I might need the clearance so I wasn't super worried about it being a big pain to install and remove, but it would be nice.

    Tried my hand at my new to me torch set up for the first time. Looks like ray charles did this with a hand tied behind his back. I’m sure with practice it’ll get better.
