There are lots of comments about cracking the back window in cold weather. I frequently carry lumber that would hang out the back year round and I live in New England so I would have to roll it up in the winter. I currently use a roll-up tonneau cover but it is starting to wear after 8 years and looking at alternatives.

    1. Is it literally impossible to roll it up in freezing temperatures without breaking it or can it be done if you roll it slowly and carefully?
    2. If you use the mesh in the winter, is it fine enough that snow wouldn't pile up inside? I would assume moisture would get in but wondering how much?

    Thanks!

Getting a ST, but wondering about getting caught out in the snow. Read a lot about not rolling the back window in the cold but not a lot about how much snow a ST can hold. Of course the type of snow matters, I know, but generally how do ST’s do with overnight snowfall weighing it down? Better to drop down on snowy nights??? This is my buddy’s snow taco with a hardtop as an extreme example, but you get the idea—DF987463-0DB1-4290-ACD8-E52365E9B49E.jpg

Holy shit thats a lot of snow....

I dont think these things are going to hold that much snow on a regular basis and not develop problems. My ST on the tacoma was pretty sturdy but i wouldnt have ever thought loading a hundred or more pounds on top was a good idea.. same for the ST I now have on my F250.

as far as the back window in the cold. When I was still in the mountains of NC I had the ST on the tacoma. never once did I have an issue with rolling or unrolling it. With that being said, we didnt get the long periods of low temps that yall get further north.

I guess I’m am wondering, forecast says 1 foot of snow—doable with ST left up
    2 feet of snow—maybe
3 feet Or more drop the st down—but damn—will crumpling it up to pack it up in the boot crack the window?

I don’t live in the mountains but I do go up often in winter.

When its super cold out around me and I have to take the topper down I just take off the rear window and toss it in the back seat to keep it from cracking.

Don’t mind the seal! I need to buy a black seal instead, but I bought it used and this is the seal the previous owner provided.

I tried messing with the top to fit where I like best, which is sort of in this position. though I do have that gap there.

For you guys that have it - do you recommenced me to move it forward, toward the cabin, or outwards to not have that gap?

Hey there, the bottom pic you attached is of my truck! Just FYI I have the third gen softopper. Purchased about 3 months ago new. I have mine setup so the back flap sits pretty much perfect with the flat part of the top of my tailgate. I installed some magnets there instead of the velcro strip so I made sure it lined up nicely for those to work well. Also mine sits very close to my cab, maybe about 1/2" away from my third brake light. I installed it closer there than the instructions recommended (like many others have also done). I know the Second Gen toppers work on third gens and vice versa, but according to Softopper you should try to find the right gen for your truck to guarantee the best fitment. From what I've seen the 2nd gen toppers sit a bit higher than the cab.

Question for all youz softopper owners. I've been seeing a lot of heavy rain recently and it seems like no matter what I do, the weather stripping slowly lets water seep through. I seam sealed the upper seams and areas where the straps are sewn on the inside and that has worked like a charm. Now i'm just getting some water coming in from the weather stripping. It seems like it only gets through once it has sat there for a while and saturated into the micro foam of the stripping. I even put brand new strips on there and still doing the same thing.

My buddy has a softopper as well and lives near me with no issues like this!

    Any suggestions or similar experiences?

3rd gen topper on a 2nd gen Taco. Been spending the last few days exploring northern Arizona & Southern Utah. So much mud & dust, the Softopper is doing a perfect job.

They may as well just liquidate their entire stock of 2nd gen toppers. The 3rd gen topper is the way to go for both 2nd and 3rd gens.

I truly don't see any difference. ST themselves will tell you the topper is the same and the only difference is the rear flap / bar / connectors. I've used a 3rd gen on a 3rd gen, a 3rd gen on a 2nd gen, and currently a 2nd gen on a 2nd gen. If there's a difference in the height I can't see it.

there is no ‘second gen’ and ‘third gen’ topper. they had an old design and updated it when the new tacoma came out. if you have a second or third gen tacoma now with a 6’ bed, and you order direct from softopper, you will get model number TAC72. they just make one style.

Curious to know what height setting y'all set your pivot pin on, for a 3rd gen truck.
