Was the transmission shop ever able to take a look at it?

That is awesome. Congrats. You should go and buy a lottery ticket now too.
Do you think your dealer was instrumental in pushing to get it covered? Are they good to deal with? If so, let us know the dealer name and we can take them off the Naughty List....

My dealer was Panama City Toyota in Panama City, FL, and I really do believe they had a part in pushing to get it replaced. When he told me it was the TC failing, and the recommended repair was a whole new transmission that would cost 8k, his next words were, "Im going to call Toyota tomorrow first thing to see if they can help out any with this because this truck is so new it shouldnt need an entire transmission in it". I cant believe my truck is over 10k outside the warranty period and theyre still replacing it

Yes, he also told me the TC was bad and recommended a new transmission as well. I kind of felt bad about it because he called me back last night and quoted me 2500 for a used transmission with 30k miles on it, so I told him to go ahead and lets do it (didnt think Toyota was going to come through like this, and they waited three days to respond to me). So i had to call him today and explained what happened and he said no problem he was placing the order in about thirty minutes so I called at the exact right time

That’s Toyota going above and beyond. Try that with a Ford, Chevy or FCA product.

It won't, at least with Chevy. I had the infamous head failure on my 2006 Colorado and documented while still within the powertrain warranty (plus the secret warranty on it) and it cost me $2000 to get it fixed or they were going to hold my truck. Crooks.

Reviving an old thread. My 2018 is at 78k and the torque converter also went bad. Toyota isn't willing to do anything and it's out of the powertrain warranty. They want $5K to install a remanufactured transmission.

out of curiosity, were there any indications that it was going to fail in the miles before?

Mine felt like the tires were spinning and the truck was shaking. It is between 20-40 mph. It's starting to freeze and ice up here in Minnesota and I honestly thought the tires were spinning a bit until it got much worse.

ok but nothing in the earlier miles that would have indicated a problem? loss of drive while going at a low speed. sporadic issue?

Nothing that I noticed. Toyota is covering the labor and selling the parts at cost. It's about 1/3 of the original quote. It was really nice of them to do that when they didn't have to do it. I don't think the transmission should have failed at 78K but I appreciate the discount on the repair bill.

Did you contact Toyota yourself or did the dealership contact them?

I have a ‘17 with 87k miles with the 20-40mph low rpm shaking and the dealership diagnosed it as a failing torque converter. They want over $3000 to replace it. Planning on taking it to a transmission shop for a second quote.

The dealership contacted Toyota. It took a day or two. My dealership wanted $5000 for a rebuilt transmission. It was about $1800 after Toyota helped out. This was parts and labor.

My dealership would not replace just the torque converter, said it didn’t work. They have done it in the past and ended up replacing the tranny very soon after the tc. I got the same story from an independent mechanic- replace both. His price was $5500

Alright, thanks. I’m going to take it to the indy transmission shop tomorrow and see what they think.

Having the same torque converter issue with my 2018 TRD OR (78K mileage). Dealer quoted $6200 for remanufactured transmission. Spoke with Toyota "Engagement" today and started a 'case." Will see where this goes and update here.

Curious to know if anything was done to the transmission like changing the atf prior to the tc failing?

My question would be, "what diagnostics were performed, to give the conclusive determination that the torque converter is bad?"
