anyways as far as i know the de-icing chemicals are relatively 'safe' until they mix with water/moisture and then a warming cycle cooks the rot

I don't know if it's the rack or the pump to be honest...it started up again today after being quiet yesterday, but it's the same faint howl that was there even before my wheeling trip this last weekend. It sounds like a ghost "hoooooooooo" right from behind the steering wheel, and only when turning tight to the left, not when doing it to the right.

It got better after I replaced the ATF in the PS pump but I never cleaned the screen so that's my next step.

I am afraid though that my rack in on borrowed time...when I did my tie rods, I noticed both boots had tears in them and the pass side had a bunch of dirt and stuff inside the boot. I cleaned it up but I know they say that once dirt gets in there, your seals aren't gonna last long

    Everything but the driveshaft. B03A - 410
I've seen pumps howl when an aftermarket high pressure line is installed. So anything that obstructs the normal flow like a clogged filter may be a cause.

yeah that's what I'm leaning towards since I've never cleaned the screen yet

My wife's Accord's PS pump is getting replaced soon, that thing howls like a banshee from the 7th circle of Hell. Wayyyy worse than mine, mine's just a whisper compared to hers. Shop that looked at it recently said the pump was cavitating/cavitated (?) and needed replaced

interesting, I wonder if my pump is whining because of the obstruction from the inline filter and cooler I added... though many people don't seem to have problems

    I have mods
My pump has whined, not howled, since I installed it when I first got the truck. I replaced the pump and rack all at the same time and I have never been able to get it to stop whining. I might eventually break down and buy another pump to see if it makes a difference. It does get less whiny when everything is hot.

yeah that's how my wife's Accord is. My god you can hear it screaming from a block away first thing in the AM when it's cold. After about 5 min of driving it sounds normal.

Mine is always there no matter hot or cold, just pretty faint.

Well that's a little reassuring. My OEM pump didn't whine until I killed it and the replacement has always whined
