Rubberized Undercoating Advice and Opinions..

So I dont have any good pictures right now cause the trucks dirty...(will wash soon once I do my oil at the 5000 mile mark) I got this one but like I said, mrtacoman88's pictures are exactly how mine turned out. No glossy, tar like finish.

My plan is to have it touched up every year (warranty lasts 10 years) and I'm hoping since I got it done when the vehicle was brand new that it will hold up and not turn into a disaster.. just going to keep a close eye on it at all times.

On another note, with the 16 and 17s getting the frame recall notice, I wonder if people like me would get rejected for getting an undercoat from another company besides Toyota... I have a 19 but I'm curious if it's only a matter of time before we all get a letter.

 

18s and up , toyota improved some areas of the frame by the engine, also slathered some beige corrosion preventing caulk in prone areas.

Thats coming from the guy who is involved in toyota frame recall campaign. He showed me those areas when my undercoating was redone.

I wouldnt worry about it man, just inspect it once in a while.

 

I think the cracking still happens even when it's done "properly", just the onset of cracking is delayed. The corrosion continues underneath... After a while the coating drys to a dull gray color. You can see the coating overspray on the bed plastic:



Note my area sees a lot of road salt. This is what the frame usually looks like for 4 months each year. I go through a touchless car wash with underbody sprayers whenever the temps go above freezing.

 

Yea, i was looking at those spots on the inside of your bed earlier and was thinking if that was the coating. I mean it shouldnt just disintegrate only after 4-5years, seen other cars with that shit and it looked good. Thats pretty bad man, you got some kind of warranty right?

If this happened to mine like this i would be furious. Mine still looks pretty solid and its black after 1.5 years. I will be keeping my eye on it though.

 

Fuck I'm glad I don't live in the rust areas. This shit looks like a fuckin nightmare.

It is a fucking nightmare. The shit is so overused. I remember being able to sleigh ride on some roads as a kid and ride 4 wheelers around the streets in snow storms. Most people stayed off the streets and they cleared the roads after it stopped snowing. Not anymore. People freak the fuck out if the roads are not bare asphalt so our municipalities are so gun shy (afraid to be sued) they spray brine on the roads before it even starts snowing and salt continuously during. We can get a foot of snow and never even have an opportunity to go out and have some fun in it while the roads are covered. We should get some kind of tax credit for having our vehicles disintegrate after 10 years. Yea, I'm bitter.

 

If it never snowed here, I'd probably still be rolling around in a 2WD sedan, blissfully ignorant of 4-wheeling.

Sometimes when it's really quiet, you can hear the frame rusting.

 

I share in your misery. And you can't wash it because it is so cold that the doors will be frozen shut when you try to go to work in the morning. I keep telling myself one of these years I am going to heat my garage just to keep it above freezing.

I can relate as I lived in the rust belt in the past. That brine solution is nasty on a car chassis and the thin sheet metal bodies that all the manufacturers are now using.

Anyone own a 2015 or newer F150 with the aluminum foil body? Curious as to how the bodies are holding up to the salt and brine.

 

I actually haven't had any body rust on this truck or my last one. Toyota body panels don't rust any more. Only the frame does. Note the pristine body on these 1st gens:

 

Shouldn't be an issue. In the F150 body, Ford uses 5000-series and 6000-series aluminum, which have good corrosion resistance (as opposed to the 2000-series and 7000-series aluminum used for load-bearing aircraft structures). Our bumper crash bar and engine components don't rust, and that's without the primer and paint body panels get. Today it's above freezing and I have a hot water spigot so the taco got de-salted:
Tomorrow is supposed to be above 40F so I'm going to do a mavcoat/fluid film touch-up.

 

i would not go as far to say that body panels do not rust on the old tacos, pic from the local salvage yard a few months ago from a truck that 'slipped through the cracks' of what happens at the end to a truck on the western fringes of the mid west salt belt...

I recently saw an old Land Cruiser that had been restored with a fully galvanized frame. It gave me a chubby.

 

Would have liked to have seen that. The frame that is. Not your chubby.

Water will create the appearance that salt is gone while it is wet. What it did was simply solubize it, and when it dries the salt will remain on the surface.
