Question for you guys and gals.... looking to buy my wife our first new truck. I have a guy at a dealer that sent me msrp. I asked for dealer invoice with holdback. He sent me a price that was “invoice” and said it was “lower” than invoice but couldn’t email it to me I had to go in. Even if it is lower than invoice I believe it’s NOT dealers invoice. I have the vin is there any way to see what the dealer paid without seeing him? I am new to buying process but just want to make sure I’m not overpaying. Any advise or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Telling us the truck’s details, pics of the truck, location, and the asking price will be helpful.

    Dear Do58,

You might be able to find a generic invoice with the aid of the Internet, but you will never get a dealer to disclose what they actually paid for a vehicle with or without an invoice. An invoice will give you an idea of what a dealership would pay for a vehicle if they were taking delivery of just the invoiced vehicle. As we all know, dealerships never take delivery of just one vehicle so they never get invoiced for just one vehicle. The dealer's price is dependent on a lot of different variables. For example, they get incentive with kick backs for certain models delivered, which is reflected in their invoices for those models.

    Hope that helps,
    Paul

FWIW: email several dealers (10+) with the exact truck you want. Year, model, options, color, rims, extras, etc and ask then for their best internet price. Some won’t respond. Some will play games. Some will actually shoot you their best deal on the truck, period.

Get preapproved at a bank or credit u ion for a loan and go buy the truck at the best price. No stress, no games, no rip off. Have bought several vehicles this way and it’s easy.

    Total 47k
Sent me an online price of 44k said it was lower than invoice and would show when I come in but can’t email me ( so I have documentation) Incase I shop or whatever. I have read that the dealer gets reimbursed on the discounts or rebates. I assume they are already in the discount but I was hoping to negotiate the price then take advantage of the rebates.

44k is not a bad price for a limited when the Sr5 Premeiums are now right around 40k after haggling form 43k or so. You can still get a barebones 4Runner for 35ish.

Also if buy used, you might save another couple k or so but these things hold value that (for me) new is only way to go.

Thanks for ALL the feedback and the link. The 1 dealer has it listed as “online price “ ( below list price supposedly ) at 46k - savings of $2.5k with online price of $44k. Am I able to recoupe the 2.5k off the $44 because they will be getting that back via kickback or is that a long shot? Also, I have a trade in. I assume that if he won’t budge there is no need to undisclose that info trying to get the lowest price. Or do I wait until I can see if I can get lower before dropping the trade in info? Sorry for the dumb simple questions. I will say I’m new to this BUT I have no problem walking because I’m married to my wife..... not the car and especially the dealer

It is never good idea to do a trade-in. Just sell the vehicle you want to get rid of outright before deciding on a new vehicle.
