Three months ago I replaced windshield in my 95 Tacoma for OEM glass (paid something like 500 dollars for it). It is Pilkington as well.

Wish I could've talked to you before you bought that. You can buy "aftermarket" Pilkington windshields, for a fraction of what you paid. Most of the time they are built on the same line they just leave off the "Toyota". I think The last windshield I installed for a customer was a '98 model and it was around $175. That was glass, install, and tax.

I know, but to avoid any potential problems with inspection of "imported car" i had to have either "E" certification or manufacturer logo on the windshield. I couldn't find any windshield with E cert so I overpaid for Toyota logo.

I did the same with 4Runner, but for whatever reason OEM windshield for my 5th gen (with heater) cost me 200 dollars.

holy thread revival, but the answer is no. I thought it was possible but I ended up finding out that you can't. It may be possible to remove the molding without removing the windshield, but you will be unable to put back a new molding without removing the windshield

So is it possible to remove the windshield, add the new trimming, and re-install the windshield? Is this something any DIYer could tackle or leave it to the experts?

i need to fix some rust around the windshield area so I am considering removing the windshield... any advice?

 - Same boat - last rainstorm left a sodden carpet, rust upper passenger side corner of windshield. Water dripping off the A-pillar grab handle - It's not supposed to rain in southern california....

Yes, it is possible to do it yourself with the right tools but I would leave that to the professionals if you want to maximise your chances of saving it and reinstall it back correctly (you don't want it to be leaky afterwards). You must really know what you are doing and be careful when removing and installing it back if you don't want any problems during and after

When I did have my truck repainted a few months ago, the bodyshop had the windshield removed, then when they were done, they had it reinstalled with a new molding. If it wasn't practical, they wouldn't have called an auto glass shop to do it and the bodyshop would have done it themselves. So I guess auto glass places can make arrangements

Oh and by the way, they managed to save my windshield during removal :)

thread revive... question on 1st gen windshields molding...

My windshield molding is in bad shape, and I'm thinking about having it replaced. Years ago, the last installer did a shitty-ass install job of sealing the glass, and used a cheap, generic molding, which doesn't seat well around the windshield. Also, the windshield seems kinda 'sunken in' down by the cowl, and I'm not sure if this is normal.

The Toyota parts catalog shows that there should be a couple of rubber 'spacers' at the bottom of the windshield in between the cab/dash & windshield glass (see pic). My '98 doesn't appear to have them (or maybe I can't see them?). It's been through at least a couple of windshield replacements in its lifetime (a family member was the original owner, I'm the 2nd owner).

Anyway, does anyone have any info on these spacers? The parts catalog actually shows that there are two types, but doesn't specify which type goes on what models. The fact that my windshield seems to sit lower at the bottom makes me wonder if maybe it needs those spacers to lift the windshield up a bit, but I'm honestly not sure, and I don't know how it was originally. I'm guessing that maybe one of the previous installers probably destroyed them or just tossed them aside & didn't use them.

curious to know this aswell, I went to the dealership not to long ago to buy the windshield molding for my 03 Tacoma, and the parts guy asked me if I knew which type of molding I needed, which I had no idea. I don't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure he showed me those spacers and told me I wouldn't know which one I needed until I pulled the windshield.

uggh, I guess we're in the same boat then. I also wanna get the OEM windshield molding. I wasn't aware that there were two different types. The parts catalog image I posted only shows one part# for the molding (part# 56117-35020).

Did the parts guy happen to mention more/less where those bumpers are supposed to be located at? I tried looking through the bottom of the windshield glass but couldn't see anything that resembled a bumper.
