Should my engine rev with steering input

Noticed my truck does NOT rev the engine when turning the steering wheel at idle. Every other vehicle I have owned has done that to help steering ease.

I have read the forums and searched and some people say it should rev and other say it shouldn't.

So my questions for y'all are:
    1. Does your truck rev when turning steering wheel when stopped/parked
    2. Should I ask the dealer about this?

    1. No.
    2. No.

I've never noticed ANY vehicle do this.

Hey man, good choice on the M/T

You're fine, I think what's happened is Toyota has smoothed out the idle increase in circumstances such as that and when the AC compressor kicks in.

Not bench racing here, my '16 (also a M/T) had a pronounced kick in rpm in both of those circumstances with it's factory calibration (04B10).

My '19 is smooth. It literally takes 2-3 seconds for the rpm to rise when the AC comes on. Try it, you'll see what I mean.

One thing they didn't change though, is that increase in rpm when you apply the brakes at idle, when not up to temp (it's like 500rpm IIRC).

    Cheers

EDIT: Also, here's proof that Toyota messed with things in their calibration WRT this "issue". You can bet the changes were incorporated into later M/Y trucks:

Re read his question...his DOESNT rev.

OP, from my 2019 and 2020 test drives I wouldn’t say the engine revs, but I’ve notice a slight rpm disruption.

I didn’t read it at all, I only read the title honestly. In my defense I woke up probably 20 minutes before I posted

Yes. I can bump the wheel and watch the rpm increase.

1 Yes my RPM's increase slighly when i rotate the steering wheel (its normal because its power assisted steering)
2 If its not broke dont fix it.

Mine too. I've never had a car do that before and the first time it caught me off guard. Was waiting to make a right turn on a slight hill so no brakes. When I turned the wheel the car jumped forward a bit.

Mine motor revs as well when turning the steering wheel left/right and just idling. In Park.

Mine does it, too. I always figured that it was because the Tacoma has hydraulic steering so the engine revved a bit to help out the steering pump.

Is the 3rd gen still using hydraulic power steering?

I was under the impression that 3rd gens come with EPS. Since every other vehicle these days uses EPS.

OP, if equipped with hydraulic power steering, revving higher while turning the wheel is natural because the engine needs to rev a little higher to assist the pump in moving the fluid it needs to across the system.

In short, it's normal. Leave it alone.

Yup. That steering pump is still chugging away in there.

Be glad that the idle doesn't jump with steering inputs. My 2018 idle jumps enough that it feels like i'm going to stuff it into the wall of my garage esp when the engine is cold. The idle load management and warm up cycle is pretty piss poor IMO. I've had it at Toyota and all they can say is normal operation. I understand that an engine is going to idle high during cold start, but mine jumps even higher with a steering input.

Always amazes me these rpm discussions. These new vehicles with ECM's compensate for power draw. Jeez.... In the '70's when you turned on headlights and blower the rpm would drop because the alternator was pulling power and the motor just slowed because of that. Poor thing didn't know any better.

It’s unlikely the 4th Gen will have a gas engine.
