Take it to local PD. Most places will hold it for xx amount of time and if nobody claims it within that time, you can go back and get it for yourself.

Jesus Christ, I’ve never seen so many internet ‘lawyers’ in one spot ahaha.

OP, this isn’t difficult - should’ve never swooped it up. Now you need to take it to the cops and drop it off so you can wash your hands of it.

You should’ve just moved it out of the way to park and that’s it - that’s what I would have done. No crime there.

You could always go put it back by the street where you found it...

Im going to try to find him or her myself hopefully I will because ive had my bike stolen many years ago and, manybother things but im not the jerk whos just gonna steal it and sell it. But I just dont feel right turning it over to the police in a way, Ill be completly honest because it was unlocked in the middle of the street for petes sake and Id have noone to blame if I damaged my truck running it over and, i couldnt even claim my insurance because i have liability.

You’d have yourself to blame for running it over and damaging your truck, not no one.

You’re starting to sound like a thief by avoiding the police.

You tag people like this @DevilTaco4

OP is a child, he sat in his truck for 20 min because someone left a bike in the street and he didnt want to get out and move it to park there because he was tired and it was cold. Then he came online to try to get justification for keeping said bike for himself, because he was pissy about it being left there. @TenMill knows what the right thing to do is here, even before he made this post.

Nevermind, I stood up for you but clearly you’re retarded if you’re going to drag this shit on anymore than you should.

Why would you NOT take it to the cops but “hang onto it” to “find” the owner?

Advice: stop making threads and go turn it in

I know how to tag people, you didn’t need the “glorification.” This was also before the OP make it clear he’s a dumbass after ignoring our advice.

    Thanks

Make the thread a poll and take the advice that comes from it.

-Keep it and find the owner yourself
    -Take it to police

I doubt it. A bike being picked up off the street isn’t worth their time, especially when all they’d have to go off to investigate is an internet post not tied to a person or location.

Try a couple of local bike shops. There’s a decent chance that the owner is a regular if the bike is a high end brand. Maybe find an LBS that sells that brand and start there.

I know that at least one person at my shop would be able to put a name to a bike if it belonged to one of our customers. And if for whatever reason nobody at the shop recognized it, we could look up the serial number in our POS system and find out who it was sold to. Most (if not all) shops place a small sticker with the shop name and phone number on it on the seat tube, close to the bottom bracket/downtube on every bike that they sell. I’d look for that and either call that shop or bring it in.

In my experience, unless it’s stolen and has been reported as such, with the serial number (most bike owners don’t record them) the cops will do nothing at all to get it to the owner.
