Replacing Water Pump and Timing Belt

how much should parts and labor run in Southen Cal for this?

Last replaced in 2012 and I think it cost $600 or so. I realize takin in to account inflation, also I could be remembering wrong..

I am being quoted $1100 otd
for water pump, timing belt and 2 serpentine belts + labor

I’ve got about 90k or so on the current water pump so this is preventive maintenance as I don’t think I’ve got any signs of leaking or failure
Wasn’t recommendEd by the shop, but value cover replacement is every time I go for an oil change

 

The parts for my timing belt/water pump/belts was about $250-$300. I got my parts from the aircabinman guy on Ebay. All OEM parts. He's pretty much the only exception to my "don't buy critical car parts from Ebay/Amazon" rule.

I was quoted $900 parts/labor for a TB replacement like 5-6 years ago, which is why I did it myself.

The DIY job really isn't that difficult, it's all just turning wrenches. It took me a solid weekend to do it, There is a sticky that has a bunch of idea for making a crank pulley tool, and the only "special" tool you need is a torque wrench for the crank pulley bolt. You can rent those for free from most auto parts stores.

 

Yeah, if you don't want to do it yourself, $1100 is a pretty reasonable price. I was quoted in the $1800 range at a dealer in the Seattle area.

Like @jbrandt says, it's not a hard job if you feel like you could do it yourself. There are some special tools needed, but even with those and the parts, you'll come in below the $1100 quote (and well below what I got at the dealer here).

• You can buy most of the parts you need in a kit on eBay. There are several of them, but I went for the 100% OEM parts kit from aircabinman.
• The crank pulley bolt, which Toyota says is a single-use bolt given the 217 ft-lbs of torque it's under while in service. (90119-16006)
• Two gallons of red coolant concentrate, to refill the radiator when it's reinstalled. (00272-1LLAC)
• Six gallons of distilled water - again, for the radiator.

• OTC 6673 Universal Belt Tension Gauge
• Lisle 58430 Shaft Type Seal Puller
• Schley Products SP 64400 Harmonic Damper Pulley Holding Tool
• OTC 4518 Stinger 5-ton Bar-Type Puller/Bearing Separator Set
  • (2) M8 Metric Bolts with a 1.25 Pitch, 100mm long with 4 washers - these are the bolts we used in conjunction with the OTC 4518 puller or other puller you have to remove the crankshaft pulley.
• PRIVATE BRAND TOOLS PBT70960 Crankshaft and Camshaft Seal Tool Kit
• Lisle 24680 Spill-Free Funnel
• Performance Tool W89208 Cam Pulley Holder
• TEKTON 24320 1/4-Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench (20-200 in.-lb./2.26-22.6 Nm)

you need to roadtrip to my area of USA, i have a quote (Feb-'19) from an indie ToyoTech for $389 including ALL belts, lost coolant, parts and labor, but not sure if it includes water pump or anything other than changing the timing belt and other belts
it just says to also inspect water pump bearing and seals

I don’t really want to replace it until it starts leaking but also don’t want to be stranded so will probably do it this Saturday

Will definitely use Aisin OEM parts - that was what was included in the $1100 figure

Took it in the shop. They opened things up and told me that 2 camseals were leaking. Extra 80 bucks for 2 seals with labor. I guess after 300k miles, you have things like this even with the first gen engine.

 

I usually skip the cam seals first change but catch them the second *they are part of most kits* so you're just overdue. Most shops have huge collections of them though.

 

you mean you catch them the second time changing the water pump / timing belt?

 

yes. Most all vehicles I might work on.
