Hi i have a 2008 Tacoma 4x4 4.0l with stock gearing and height with 265/75r16s on ProComp rims. I want to lift the truck 3 inches and possibly put 33s on it but I’m worried all this will make me have to re gear to 4.10s. How much power loss would I have and has anyone else done the lift and 33s with stock 3.73 gearing? I want to have more clearance for off-roading and such.

4.56s?!? I multiplied that 33x3.73/30.5=4.03 gears which is in between 3.73 and 4.10. “30.5 is stock tire” 4.56 seems to low.

I run 33's on my 3rd Gen (with 3" lift). I have not re-geared, and I don't plan to. Now if going bigger than 33's, I definitely would.

Nope not going bigger. So with your 3.5 your doing ok with 33s with a 3 inch lift? I don’t know what gears the 2016+ have, I thought they were 3.90s or something.

Just info. The 2016 TRD have 3.90s with the automatic & 4.30s with the manual transmission.

i think the point of the post is that 3.73 and 4.10 are so close that you won’t notice it that much with 33’s but if you feel you want more power, you might as well go 4.56 so you really get more power. You’ll feel the added rotational mass a lot more so going for the stock equivalent gearing will still feel slower with the heavier tires.

if you’re adding 20 lbs per corner as can easily be done going from a P to LT/E tire, it’s going to feel like you’ve got an extra couple people in it as you get rolling.

Typically going from a 4.10 gear to a 4.56 will net about 300-350 rpm increase and going to 4.88 gear would be another 300-350 more rpm

There's (3) variations of re-gearing to suit your needs

    1) re-gear to to enhance performance ( off the line throttle response)

    2) re-gear to enhance fuel economy

    3) re-gear to bring gearing back to stock figuring in new tire size

Whenever I re-gear a vehicle I always go with option #1 for performance and giving up some fuel economy as a tradeoff

I felt like the truck was fine with a 3” lift and 33” tires and a ton off added weight. It was never quick to begin with and the performance and fuel economy was good enough that I didn’t think spending a few thousand dollars on gears was worth it.

From my experience with a mid travel suspension, 33's and an auto trans , 4:56 gears are perfect. Without the gears, the truck would be reluctant to up shift. The engine would never peak then change gears. With all the added weight I have now the truck feels good driving around and going up or down muddy hills the lower gearing keeps you in better control.20170323_122239.jpg

Leave the gears, install a front locker. That's a better bang for buck if ground clearance is honestly one of your main concerns.

Also, most people DON'T regear with a 3" lift and 33's. Folks that do regear, usually do it to make up for a ton of weight.

Here's what you would be with running 4.10 gears at 70 mph

    Automatic without Overdrive: 3106

    Automatic with Overdrive: 2058

    Manual: 2940

    5 Speed: 2352

    With 4.56's at 70mph .....

    Automatic without Overdrive: 3455

    Automatic with Overdrive: 2289

    Manual: 3270

    5 Speed: 2616

Your current gear ratio 3.73 with 33" tires at 70mph

    Automatic without Overdrive: 2826

    Automatic with Overdrive: 1872

    Manual: 2675

This would be a perfect gear ratio if you were off roading and would make for less strain on the clutch and low range gearing would be perfect !!!

    5.29 gears at 70mph with 33" tires

    Automatic without Overdrive: 4008

    Automatic with Overdrive: 2655

2015 SR5, 6spd manual, with armor, 255 85 16 tires and 4.88 gears. 70 mph and I’m just above3000 rpms. Great around town, mountain passes, and offroad. Sucks on freeways. If you can handle everyone passing you then it’s okay.
I tried stock gears and 33’s but with added weight of armor, tools, camping gear, I was constantly downshifting and up shifting. Doing it all over I would go 4.56.

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
I'm not certain what the gears are either, but it is fine. That said I do have a Shift Sense Pro that is much smarter than the transmission.

Yep sure am, I’ve got 33s and full armor and 3in lift. From the stock 3.73s to 4.56s made a huge difference in drive ability. Feels like it pulls harder than when it was completely stock and still get decent mpgs 15-16 on the hwy. I can actually cruise at 70 in OD now and rpms are about 23-2400.
@Beretta4x4 Josh has rode in it as well and can confirm this.
