My uncle (same one who accidentally put 87 in the Pathfinder) has a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 DCSB 4x4 with the Cummins Diesel and automatic. He has reported 18 MPG on the highway while pulling his 1969 Airstream camper.

20 MPG is a unicorn truck?

I was getting 20 MPG until I got my frame and exhaust replaced. Now I get 18 MPG. Might be winter gas too though. Anyways I'm due for new plugs, so I'll see if that helps.

What is your truck, exactly? Cab, bed, engine, tranny, etc?

I know a few with a transmission with 400k miles and no issues. Biggest killer is not using OD when towing which burns them out.

My neighbor across the street had one for a year or two, he told me he always wanted one but decided it wasn't worth the expense.

That’s exactly why my dad sold his BMW convertible after two years. He could easily afford the car, but the cost of just routine maintenance took the fun right out of it.

This guy across the road bought a Suburban to replace it, he had a Hummer prior to the Mercedes but that was just more of the same.

    Truck isn't stock.
Hills are not compensated in the mpg for manufactures.
Your winter blend up there is shit
Drive like an egg is under the pedal
How often is it downshifting raising the revs on small hills?

I quit driving with my head out the window and tongue out and its saved me 0.8 mpg

It is very frustrating to me as a mechanic to hear stories like this, I was at the stealership a few days ago to get the first oil change on my truck (only because it's free) and a older gentleman pulled up in a very clean 2wd 2nd gen, I heard him tell the service writer that he had two warning lights, the service writer looked in and with out missing a beat told him "the tire light is on because you probably have a bad tire, and the check engine light comes on when the vehical detects a engine misfire." He never even checked the tire pressure and sure as hell didn't plug in a scanner to see why the check engine light was on.

Oil can not penetrate into drums and ruin them, if they were out of tolerance then you should have asked them what the specs are and to show you the measurements. If they were replaced because they were out of tolerance then somewhere the tech had to record his findings and pass them onto the service writer, it should be documented in your paperwork. At this point I would chalk this one up to a learning experience and move on, it's a shitty feeling thinking you were taken advantage of, but dwelling on it won't make it better.
