My rack with Bed cover. I hate tailgate pads and hitch racks. All it takes is one distracted driver updating there Instagram to demolish your bike.

I use a tailgate pad for local rides and/or more than 2 bikes. And I have a Tyger rollup soft tonneau. No incompatibility, though it's easier to close and latch the tonneau with the tailgate open, then close the tailgate. I use a 1Up hitch rack for longer trips, where the is typically full of camping gear. With the hitch rack in its normal position but no bikes, I can open the tailgate fully horizontal. With the 1Up loaded with bikes in the normal position, I can just crack the gate open enough to reach the tonneau latches. With bikes and the rack tipped down, I can open the tailgate fully. Best of all worlds in my opinion, though I do sometimes worry about tailgaters ...

The tailgate pads are pretty afordable. Definitely will look at those. Too bad I got rid of the hitch mount rack I used to have. I started using the spare tire mount rack on the Jeep even when towing because my old camper just had a flat bumper with no place to mount a rack on the rear like my newer one does. Maybe get a pad for local and a rack that lowers for long or camping trips when I move to the Taco.

Getting rear ended with the bikes does bother me some too but then if they do their insurance company would have to pay for the damages. I'm more ok with replacing a $500 specialized hard rock and and old Huffer I got off Craigslist for a friend bike than replacing or having major repairs done to my vehicle.

All of my bikes are over 9k and been built up by me. So I cringe at the fact being rear ended and taking them out. A truck is a truck your going to have damage either way

I also have both a bed rack and a tonneau cover.
    • I remove my bed rack bars whenever I'm not using my RTT (ie. during the entire winter)
    • When my bed rack bars are off, I roll up the tonneau cover and use a Yakima tailgate pad (medium) most of the time -- it carries 1 to 6 bikes, so it's fun for the whole family. Too easy.
    • When my bed rack and RTT are both on, and I just need to carry one bike, I remove the added 1up roof tray from my 1up hitch rack and attach it to the bed rack bars alongside my RTT (ie. solo rides and camping trips).
    • When my bed rack and RTT are both on, and I need to carry two bikes, I use the 1up hitch rack with two trays.
    • I bought a specific tonneau and bed rack combination that still allows full access to my bed when the bike and RTT are mounted above.
Got all the bases covered... for now.

2019 Salsa Fargo. In the process of acquiring all of the bags and other kit as we speak. Planning the first trip for late March... unless I just can't wait that long and decide to do some cold weather overnighters, as well.

I haven't really tested it on anything substantial yet, but it feels great around the hood and some of the short trails near my house. Can't wait for the spring to get here!

My plan is to swap the bags back and forth between this Salsa and the singlespeed Surly Krampus I built in October if/when I get the urge to really punish myself with rowdier singletrack and an extra 20 pounds of gear. lol :headbang:

Ok wow those are some expensive bikes. I'd be more worried about them than the truck too. For me though it's mine got smashed just go to the bike shop and get a new one of this year's model of the rack and go. I love my bike but it isn't too special like yours. I'd be more upset over the truck.

Holy crap. I havent seen one of those in years.... funny, I focused on the PMP.... and thought about some DRT stuff,,, then, noticed the whole damn table. Awesome.

    Totally doable.

My 1up will be here Friday. Going to mount it directly to the bars. Have a basket on the racks too, with a soft pod that goes with it...20190519_162548.jpg

No, thank you, sir. That's a fine piece of kit, but I have another on the way.
