So why does Toyota sell the Tacoma with the ECU tune that it does?

Anyone in the Oklahoma area with an OVTune want to compare? I really need to see how OVTune will make this truck walk on water for myself.

 

I had my 2013 for two weeks after receiving my 2020. The 2020 shifts better.

 

People who say an OVT tune makes no difference either did something wrong or there is something else interfering or overriding. I have a MT so I obviously am not talking shift points.

I have a '20. I think it drives fine. Does it downshift from 6th gear on the highway when i step on the gas, yes. Does it downshift more than other cars I own with larger engines and different tuning, yes. I don't find it annoying at all. Would I like the truck more if it had 100 more HP? Of course. I don't find that it hunts around the way members here have described on older models. I think there must have been some change (as Toyota said) to the tuning for 2020. I was planning to get the OVTune when I purchased the car, but so far I have not felt the need.
I think Toyota does what they do for the combination of reliability and CAFE standards. They sell a ton of Tacoma's and they need it to get the best EPA rating it can to offset things like the Tundra, 4Runner, etc. etc.

 

OV tune completely changed the driving characteristics of my truck in a good way.

I plan to keep my truck forever and the stock tune wasn’t doing it for me so I changed it.

That said, if you’re happy with the stock tune that’s great too. You’ll save yourself $700.

 

I only tried the FOB 91 octane, but I am not sure how anyone could say that stock feels the same as the Ovtune.

It’s not in the “intake/exhaust” kind of... “eh I kind of feel something” category.

It is a clear and substantial difference in performance.


If had a choice to start over, I would rather spend money on OVtune than anything other mod available for the Tacoma.

I’d say it’s the number 1 first mod for this vehicle.

 

I am relatively happy with the stock tune, but I am also an old man.

If I had to gripe though, the dead pedal effect does bother me. It doesn't always happen on acceleration, but there are a few times where I am merging into traffic and want to punch it, push on the pedal, no response, push on the pedal more, and after what seems like an eternity, my wheels start squealing/spinning out, the ABS is kicking in, I got more axle wrap up the wazoo than is respectable for a man of my age, and my Off Road suspension is bucking like I'm driving a dragster. So then I slightly let off the gas to compensate, and now it's like I hit an invisible wall, the suspension bucks in the opposite direction, my headlights are aiming at the ground a couple feet in front of me, and not only does my ride look like a donkey, I feel like one too.

That is just messed up.

 

A stock truck is right on the edge of acceptable. We start increasing tire size, adding weight, and lifting the truck now 6th gear is useless. 5th has no power.

On the Automatics Toyota did some weird stuff with the shift logic and throttle control. All in the name of fuel economy. OVTuned got rid of a lot of frustrations I had. Hopefully 2.0 final gets me even closer to ideal. In the end the gearing is all wrong. I'm partly to blame for the large tires, increased weight, and additional air resistance due to large tires and lift.

I'd love to just change the individual gear ratios of the transmission and leave the final drive(s) alone. But that's not practical. A change to the final drive(s) is much easier. I'd make 6th the same as the factory 5th. Then space a new 4th and 5th evenly between the stock 3rd and new 6th.

 

I am interested in the ovtune just bc of all the chatter but I have no problems with the way my truck shifts nor with the amount of power it has stock. I’m also very reluctant to do the ov tune bc I bought this truck new and I want the reliability and toughness the Tacoma is known for lasting me several years.. I want to hand this truck down to my now 8 year old son when he turns 15 amd I’ll then buy myself another new Tacoma if I get the reliability and dependability out of this truck. This truck looks great it’s so much fun to mod and I truly enjoy driving it as is

You drove tune what a day or 2?
I drove over 10k on various versions of ov tunes and back to stock tsb for now..
Latest version is fine on open roads, but it does not fit well into daily stop n go grind.
Give it a time before jumping into conclusions.
Just remember, by flashing you reset learning values. I get truck perky every time I do reset

 

Dynamic driving modes would be a great feature for the Tacoma. Eco, Normal, Sport, Offroad, Towing. Should be a feature in all midsize trucks really. The Frontier had a 0-40mph WOT restriction for years, It's easily removed with a plug in tuner but why not make it a feature instead of a compromise.

Was the other one you sampled an auto or manual? I feel that the tune is more noticeable on the auto platform.

 

Where you able to get the ECU update done on your manual?
