You dont need brakes. You just need thicker snow.

@Indy thank you for the explanation of not engaging the engine in certain circumstances. pretty sure the really bad pages are finally behind us on this thread.

I'd rather die in a blaze of fire, snow and crushed metal than move to Florida.

There's a free places I wouldn't live, the major cities like Orlando are nuts. We did our honeymoon here and a couple vacations, always in the Kissimmee or Miami area and it was fun to visit but I was the same way.

But 5 or years ago I came down to chase alligators and got to see a lot of other areas. I live in the space coast area, I'm an hour from the parks, 15 minutes to the ocean, it's beautiful year round, no crime and u can watch rockets launch from my back porch.

Generally agree with everything which seems well thought out.
But, this comment seems Too generalized and as defined.
A free wheeling wheel has more turning traction then one used for braking or acceleration. A powered or braking. front wheel will have less turning traction then then one that is free wheeling. Deep snow and mud is a different animal as tires can literally, clear their treads by spinning. Hence, the different strategy in deep snow and mud.
Don’t think so ? Take a corner in a front drive car with the power on, then off. When off, the fwd car oversteers...
It’s the same with a 4 wd truck. If the power is on, the truck understeers. In deep snow and mud where traction can be regained by spinning the wheels, the traction from the tires can be enhanced. In general, NO.

Abs, 15 times a second, allows the wheel to free wheel. If in 4 wd with the power on and locked center differential, abs is essentially over ridden. So much so, that many abs functions are literally, rendered useless in 4 hi. That’s why a huge premium is place in keeping speed down.

The OP may or may not have abs. But even attempting to use so called threshold braking, 4 wd makes it much less effective when engaged then being in 2 wd when it comes to maintaining steerage.

Good summary. Let me add, the same loss of traction used in steering when braking, happens also when applying any torque to the front wheels. It’s especially difficult climbing hills in slippery conditions and trying to make a turn. With 4 wd, any torque applied to the front wheels decreases steering traction. When plowing up a hill and we have to also negotiate a turn at the top, the procedure gets a little harry. You literally have to accelerate as much as possible till you reach the turn, and hope you have enough momentum to move snow while turning with the power off.
The weight of the snow, the plow and any power on the front all induce understeer.
It’s the same that occurs on a less scale with any 4 wd.

Yes sometimes a powered front axel can cause understeer, but at slower speeds, if you get on the accelerator it can pull you out of understeer. Doesn't work very well on ice, but on packed snow it works great. In my opinion one of the greatest assets of 4wd on slick roads.

I hear you. Please read my addendum. It works on some snow ( and mud) because the spinning action clears the treads. The pulling action does not occurred as a function of the driving the front wheels without this action. It’s normal for front driven axles to respond with understeer. It’s only in special conditions like deep snow and mud, that they might not.
I’m not saying it does not steer at all, but the more torque, the more understeer.
Otherwise, I think we agree....excellent post overall.

It is a generalized statement, which is why it says"in general".

You don’t know shit about Maine. There are seven mountain ranges in Maine including the Appalachian Mountains that end at Katahdin. The first thing most people who visit Maine do, is get lost in the 89% of forest coverage, the most in the US. Sounds like you’re getting poor information.

There are no mountains on the east coast. There are a few hills though.

The smallest mountain in the world is the little known Mount Wycheproof at 141 feet above the surrounding terrain. An incline is an incline.

    Ha ha.
    In your dreams.
“ you’ve drove.” ? You should have spent a little of the hiking time studying your native tongue.

    Yup, all straight down.
We did this hike twice a year for decades....while you were hollering for “yo” mama and whining because someone’s Taco had seats that didn’t fit their lard butts. :)
