Ok guys here is something that has been driving me crazy. Since I have had this truck I have had this stupid clanking noise that no one at toyota can figure out. I have made some mods but I have always had this noise. Its only when I drive on rough roads. My truck: 4x4 09 manual 6 speed v6. PLEASE HELP!!

Here is a video of the sound while driving about 3 miles per hour on a bumpy road with a few small indentations and so on.

Also here is the list of things toyota ruled out.

    Brake Pads
    Heat shields
    loose wheel
leaf springs ( no idea why cause the sound is only in the front of the truck )

The first thing that came to my mind was if you have sway bar disconnects that could be the ring for the pin just bouncing around.

I have a similar noise coming from my drivers side front.

Someone in another thread mentioned something about the front bumper extensions or something? Apparently there is also a tsb for it?

Haven't looked much into it, but might be something to consider.

doesn't sound like it is linked to wheel speed. I would crawl under there and start looking for loose heat shields and skid plates.

Well its now in to toyota to do the Leaf TSB and to look in to the noise further. I showed them all the responses from this post so hopefully they will find something. Any other ideas?

    muffler bearing?

something wedged on top of your skid plate rattling around. I know in winter if I get snow packed in there it drives poor, the wheels as well.

marbles in the gas tank? someone tie cans to the underside of your truck?

Lol that marbles thing got me. Good one I needed that. The skid thing seems to be what every one is saying so I guess I will pull all of them off and drive without it to see if that makes a difference. The truck has been at Toyota since 7am and still no word.

I also really appreciate all these tips. I am txt them to Toyota as they come in so thank you guys.

Hang onto the undercarriage while someone drives it, you'll be able to pinpoint the noise then :D

Seriously that's one crazy sound, let us know what it is when you figure it out :)

I have the same noise and I am pretty certain that it is the CV axle. Get under your truck and shake it back and forth, it has a lot of play. I have noticed when I am in 4wd and the CV is under a load the noise pretty much goes away. Its soo annoying.

I will for sure. Its still at toyota and no updates so far.

I checked a couple of times and nothing feels loose. I have wiggled the tires and other things as well and no luck with loose ness.

I am wondering if that could be it, I had no issues when I first got the truck and i am almost 100 percent that its not the skid, suspension, or engine breaking a mount.... If it was the cv how could I trouble shoot this myself so I can take it toyota? I have noticed that if I ask my dealership to look they do a half ass job, but if I tell them what I "think" is wrong and they agree, they jump all over it. Again thanks guys for all the imput.

I agree. I have the TRD plate and the standard plate and it sounds like they are hitting each other. But I have checked a ton of times, no issues with the mounts and there is not hitting. When I get the truck back from toyota today I am going to take it out and see if it still makes noise, if it does I am going to pull off the skid plate's and drive it off road again... If I still have the noise I am going to turn around and take it right back in and tell them to check this.... I have printed out all the comments you guys have left and will tell them go down the list and see if you can rule these out.

I bent my skidplate and it sounded a little different than that before i bent it back. Mine has clunked since i drove it home from the dealership.

Well I got it back today with the leaf tsb ( side note, amazing ride difference... ) and a service. THey said they found the reason it was making noise and that it was the skid plate. I was really stoked except they only said that because the skid plate has a bend in it from some damage that happened before. I got home, pulled of the trd plate and then went for a drive..... STILL NOISY !! Called back toyota and said now what.. They have not yet returned my call.

I plan on taking the factory skid plate off in the morning and taking the truck in to toyota at 7am.

If you guys can think of anything else let me know.

Ok update... Took all trail armor off, reseated front coils, made sure everything was tight and took it back to Toyota. Got the mechanic and took him for a drive. Now they are worried and are going to keep my truck for a couple days. Had 3 guys look at it and also at this forum. Compared with all tsb issues and nothing. Matches. When Toyota knows i will update the post.
