Backing plates arent salvageable? Looks like you could clean them up with a bench grinder

The bottom 80-90% is still solid, but both sides have holes in the top of the plates. They aren't in danger of falling apart any time soon, but it seems like the holes will let water and gunk into the drums. Will probably clean some more, cover with rust converting paint and then seal the holes with aluminum tape.

I'm too afraid shit will go flying everywhere or slide around. It's just easier to throw them all behind the seat.

You need to press the bearing and axle out of the bearing receiver cup, then pound the studs out.

    https://flic.kr/p/2gDnSAy

Basically the same process as replacing the bearing but just the extra step of pounding the studs out and then putting them back in.

Next step would essentially be to press of the various retainers, ABS tone ring (if you have one) and bearings. Essentially the same as doing rear axle seals (which I'd replace at the same time while you're in there).

Here's my write-up of doing it, with links to part numbers, all the tools you need, and a step-by-step guide:

That's an excellent write-up, thanks for posting it. I won't really have the space to store a shop press anytime soon though, so that might be one job I leave to the professionals.

I hear ya. You might see if you've got a buddy around with a press (or one who might want to go in with you on a press and then keep it at their place), or if you can take the axles to a shop to just do the pressing...b/c at least in my neck of the woods, a rear axle seal job (which is essentially what you'd say you wanted) is a costly affair.

Question for any of you 01-04 guys that have installed an All Pro front bumper (the Apex one in particular)

Did your frame rail ends have this wing on them (marked in pic below)? Because my 04 does (or did I should say)...I had to cut those wing tips off for the bumper to fit, otherwise it blocked the bumper from sliding onto the frame rails.

    2001-to-2004-Toyota-Tacoma-Frame-Mount-Bracket.jpg

What's odd is that AP only states that this is necessary for earlier model year Tacomas, 01-04 should not require any cutting. Makes me wonder about my frame rail ends and why the heck they had those wings on them.

Wasn't a big deal, I was able to cut them off with a grinder and then the bumper fit on as it should. It's sitting about a 1/4" higher on the driver side only because I installed it myself while balancing the 100lb bumper on a floor jack with 2 blocks of wood underneath...do not recommend. Have a friend help instead, lol. I need to loosen the bolts and even it out, but its on and I'm happy with it overall.

My ‘03 had those weird wings. I need to modify this section on my bumper but I did just like you and cut it off.

Ok good, I feel better now...was afraid my 04 had something weird done to it before I got it. Odd that AP doesn't mention doing that in the 01 - 04 instructions. Only on the 1995-2000 ones

My 02 and 03 both had them. I just left them on with my trailgear bumper. I did kind of mush them inward during both installs, but not a big deal.
