I've got a 2006 Prerunner with the 4 liter v6 and 5 speed auto trans, been a good truck, today it started making a whine in any gear and neutral and park that rises and falls with the RPM, any suggestions on where to look first, it has 104K miles on it, any info is appreciated
    thanks

Whine where? Under hood? Near transmission?... could be your power steering pump...alternator... bunch of stuff.
A/C compressor... idler pulleys...and on and on

Probably not transmission, since it whines in park/ neutral.

Harbor freight stethoscope or tube and listen at the alternator, PS pump, A/C unit, idler pully, etc. and see if that's where the sound is coming from. Chances are it's a bearing on one of those and not a serious engine problem.

Edit: "wouldn't happen if you had a manual transmission"! :)

I thought maybe torque converter or transmission pump, but came on instantly this morning, all the fluids are fine, cant check the trans fluid but it does not leak

take the 10 min to pull the serpentine belt and spin each component by hand. Ill be you find that alternator / or idler(s) / or tensioner is bad. With the belt pulled fire the truck up and if the whine disappears, you know its one of the front accessories that spins due to the belt.

You don’t even need a stethoscope, just stick a piece of tubing to your ear and point it towards the various pulleys (carefully!). You’ll find out real quick which is the culprit.

This morning I went out and sprayed WD-40 and CLP on all the stuff that the serpentine belt turns, it got about 70% quieter for 10 minutes then gradually got louder. So I just need to identify which of those rotating suckers is the culprit and get to work. Likely candidates for 104K truck? BTW, many thanks for the inputs from this forum!
    Cheers,

4 drops of water will ruin those pulleys on a new truck. Getting 104 from them is amazing

I would replace all pulleys. If one is going out, the others may not be far behind. I have driven through some water up to my headlight and it took 170k to kill my original pulleys. Tensioner did however give up long before that around 100k.

I’ll bet it’s an idler pulley.

I’d just buy the 2 uppers and 1 lower - replace them all so you don’t have to worry about doing it multiple times.

For the tensioner I’d buy this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HAP3W1...olid=1VNNK0J7AYR5G&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

And swap in this bearing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0045DWDJ...olid=1VNNK0J7AYR5G&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

That will fit on the stock tensioner (which doesn’t normally go bad) with the correct clearance.
