Factory Service Manual?

New 2nd gen owner (2015). Looking to track down a hard copy of a factory service manual like I have for my 2004. A quick google/eBay search isn’t coming up with much love for 2nd gen stuff. Are there hard copies out there? I’m sure I can download and print pages, but that’s not what I’m looking for.

So, it would appear in that post, that hard copies were no longer printed after 2010-2011ish. Is there enough difference in the 2005-2011/2012-2015 trucks to really warrant downloading and then printing and binding an entire FSM? I found a 2010 manual on eBay. Mostly looking for mechanical info, but I’m sure somewhere down the road, systems and electrical will be sections that I’ll be consulting.

I’m familiar. I have a factory service manual for my 04 which is comprised of 4 books. I want a hard copy, because when I’m pissed off under my truck wrenching and something isn’t going my way, I don’t want to take my coveralls off, go in the house, wash my hands, find the laptop, find the charging cable for the laptop, figure out why the fuck the damn thing isn’t charging, find the website or folder, wait for it to load, awkwardly scroll through 5000 pages to find the information that I’m looking for, select the page to be printed (if I had a printer, which I don’t), find the fucking printer paper and then get back in my coveralls to do the job. So much easier to have the fsm on your tool box. You know about where the section is in the book, you flip to it with your greasy gloves, put a post it not on the page for future reference, and go back to work. If I had to reference a digital copy when I tore my manual trans in my 04 apart, I’d be in the looney bin right now.

If I can’t find a hard copy, that’s what I’ll do. I’m just trying to figure out if the 2010 model year has enough major differences to justify going through all of that mess around. I am not familiar AT ALL with 2nd gens, so any info on the differences and idiosyncrasies would be helpful info for me.

 

Am I making sense when I ask, “I want to know if there’s enough of a difference from the model years 2010 (which I can find a hard copy for on eBay) and 2015 (which is what I own)?” With my 2004 service manual, it covers many more years than just the 2004, and with some knowledge, you can differentiate between sub models/years differences. Like, my 04 has ECTS which is unique, in its configuration, to the 2003-2004 model Tacoma’s and 2001-2002 4Runners. The rest of them prior had manual throttle bodies. Or, 96’s have different rear leaf springs than the rest of the 1st gen model years. One of the big reason that this is a concern to me is that in parts hunting for my 2015, I’m noticing that 2nd gen parts aren’t always “Compatible” according to the manufacturer. An example would be for control arm bushings, which I’m planning on replacing. Aftermarket manufacturers specify 2005-2013, with no alternative to but oem bushings have the same part number for

Very little. I’d get an early 2nd gen manual and call it good.

you need a cheap laptop/tablet soley for the shop, so it can get grubby while connecting to techinfo.toyota.com and no one cares

anyone should be able to find a basic tablet for 40 bucks that will do the job of viewing docs on techinfo and can survive
some grubby shop fingers

 

That’s a pretty good idea. I have used text books and manuals for work on a tablet and it’s always been frustrating enough for me to end up buying the hard copies. I’ll probably end up adding a tablet to my tool box though.
