So why did they do it then? What was the reasoning behind changing something that has successfully been in use for the last 65 years?

I agree, just put a Toyota filter on it and call it a day. I've sold hundreds of thousands of Fram, AC and Wix oil filters over the years in my auto parts stores and never had a problem with any of them.
Using a good quality oil and changing oil and filter (any brand quality filter) regularly is what's important.

You can just burn the filter media. With a spin on, you gotta separate the metal from the media.

$200 for a minor convenience? No thanks I’ll stick with the OEM. Already changed to metal housing so I won’t break a plastic tab from over tightening.

 

I went down to Toyota and bought myself an oil filter for my truck for about 7 bucks. I thought that was not a bad deal at all?

 

You can buy them in bulk on Ebay or Amazon for about $5 each so you didn't do too bad for a single at the dealership.

2nd for the stock filter...I went to the dealer last week, truck is going to get its first oil change tomorrow. I went to the parts department and asked for the filter. He asked if I needed the washer and I said yes, so he just dropped one in the filter box, no charge. I was out the door for less than $6, tax included.

Being still under warranty it’s one less round in the chamber Toyota can use to deny a powertrain warranty claim as unlikely as it may be.

 

Toyota like all brands, wants you to get all your services at the dealership, so if they make it hard to do, more people go to the dealer to get easy shit done, that used to be easy to do.....

 

Wix sells millions upon millions of oil filters every year and as with any products sold in these quantities you will find examples of defects if you scour the internet hard enough. You can find the same with Fram and other top brand/quality filters.
As I stated in my earlier post, I've probably sold close to a million Fram, AC and Wix filters in my 16 years owning auto parts stores to DIYs, shops, car dealers, and fleets etc I never had an issue with the exception of the rare user error such as filters tightened too much, too little, double-gasketed etc.

You probably have more chance of getting struck by lightening getting in/out of your Tacoma then getting a Wix filter that's going to do harm to your engine.

 

I guess, but I'd argue Toyota sells similar quantities of filters without these QC issues. I'm sure you didn't skim through the 16 pages on that forum (FWIW I didn't scour the Internet to find that, it's a forum dedicated to Land Cruisers which I also frequent) but my take away is Wix used to be a good high quality OEM alternative and now they are not. A dozen or so examples of filter failures mentioned in that thread is not insignificant when there are probably only ~3000 80 series owners on that forum. And some number less than that are folks who use/d Wix filters. While a statistically small number of failures may be insignificant to these corporations I guarantee you it's not insignificant to someone who has to come out of pocket to the tune of $5-8k to rebuild a motor because of a faulty filter. And they know no one is going to lawyer up and hold them accountable since the math there doesn't make sense. So until someone else scours the Interwebs and finds an example of an OEM Toyota filter disintegrating like the Wix pictured above I'll stick with the OEM filters. It's not like they're super expensive either.

 

I too would like to know an answer to this - I can see if the filter is on the side or mounted gasket down an anti drain valve is important but one hanging off the bottom of the engine it should make no difference - Unless I am missing something which I do at times.

From the link earlier - the 90915 Toyota filter has 225.9 sq in of medium

I just measured an element I have for gen 3 on the shelf Its a Toyota 04152-YZZA1- 2.5" tall, 44 pleats 3/4 in deep - giving aprox 66" of length - right around 165sq in of medium.

That is substantually less but I do not know if there is a difference in medium quality that alows for the lower sq in being as good.

The other part that suprises me - the gen 3 has a 10,000 mile interval (16000km) I believe my dads Gen 2 was substantually less that that. which I find odd.

I only go 8000km between changes as that is my comfort level - "no one ever ruined an engine with a quality oil change"

I will personally keep using the element unless someone checks the medium in the all in one and finds it is the same product - then I will concider adding an adapter and go with a toyota spin on for the extra medium.
