My SRS light turned on a couple of days ago for no reason.. I've been researching online and it seems like a lot of people are having the same issues with it. I want to try and make it into a recall. but I don't think it will work on my own. Before I take it to the dealer I had it scanned in a couple of places and returns the what seems the most usual error
    "Total codes 001
    Code001:
    B1801 Open in D History

    Squib Circuit"

This is where I filed online
    https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm
And this is what I wrote,
"2006 Toyota Tacoma SR5 DBL Cab, 6 cyl, 4.0 eng. 65k miles, 2 wheel drive, automatic transmission: Driver side airbag light turned on and stays on. I have searched the internet for info. on it and have found a lot of people have been having this problem. I had it reset by a couple of different shops and the light comes back on. going by the info. found on line, from google to newsgroups. the Toyota dealers are just charging for the same work done and not admitting a product defect. I am taking mine to the dealer and is $117.00 just to diagnose it.. and I know this takes them 10 min or less to hook it up to the computer and get the error codes printed. We the consumers need some help. and I and I'm sure everyone else that has been having this problem would greatly appreciate if someone can look into it. I know there is a recall for the side curtain airbags.. but I don't think mine is equipped with those. I have even read that there have been instances where the bag deploys for no reason, while the truck is been driven with that light on.. I'm guessing not all of us can afford having this corrected as soon as the light turns on. Thank you"

This dealers are charging $90 to $120 just for the diagnostic.. and it seems the repairs can go from $300 up to $800.00

The light isn't on for no reason, its on because there is a problem in the SRS system - the code B1801 indicates where to look. Resetting the light isn't going to make it go away until you fix the problem - that is the point of the light, to indicate a problem and malfunction of a component.

The code represents an open circuit in the drivers side of the system. Due to the code, my guess would most likely be the spiral cable. Other possibilities of course but Toyota's spiral cables haven't been known to last long term. Very common problem with the pre 2005 Tacoma's as well.

Thanks for the reply... and I know the code means that there is a problem... my issue is, that it seem is happening to a lot of people. I don't think that this should be he case. I can understand, brakes, wheels, engine, but specially a wire that as far as I know just seats there until is need it... like in an accident.. it should not just be going bad.. just because.

Sorry for enlightening you. YOU were the one who stated the light illuminated for "no reason".

Things go bad. If you do not wish to accept this and replace it - good luck with your cause. If man made it - it will break.

I agree, the problem is quite common but I read on another forum that Toyota is aware of the problem and will be updating the part.

Just FYI, I contacted Toyota's corporate office... they contacted the Dealer where I had the appointment. my total expense was $117.00 total. that included diagnostic, labor, taxes, and no charge for parts. :) the parts alone where over $200.00. I guess they know of the problem.

So it sounds like you had a satisfactory resolution to your problem!

And it seems to me it would be appropriate to join OP in filing a complaint as suggested only if actually having this problem. Not that you intended anything else, I just thought it a good idea to make it clear.

If the failures are construed to be significant in number and pose a sufficient safety hazard then I'm sure NHTSA will force a recall. But until then, I think your experience suggests contacting Toyota may result in some assistance.

By the way, what were the parts?

The spiral cable and one of the sensors... Don't have the receipt with me now. But the listed price of the cable was like $263.00

Your dam right it's happening to often. My srs light came on after 31,000 miles and my truck was about 3 months out of warranty. The dealer said the spiral cable was the problem. When I asked why it had gone bad so soon I was told it was caused from turning the steering wheel so often. When I started to raise a stink they called the regional rep. and he told them to go ahead and replace it at no charge. There is no doubt in my mind that a lot of these spiral cables are not lasting as long as they should.

Well, this is probably where you should start https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm there have to be enough people filing the complain or is not going to became a recall...

Actually, I'm pretty sure there isn't a safety issue. The light notifies you there is a problem with the airbag and you have a responsibility to see it's repaired. If the problem occurred in the warranty period then Toyota would do it for you.

The situation here is the exact same as when stop light bulbs goes out: NHTSA ain't gonna order a recall just cause it blew since it's very obvious it did and so you have to replace it to pass safety inspection.

I think NHTSA would see a safety issue, get involved and order a recall only if you don't know your safety devices aren't functioning right, e.g., the trouble light doesn't come on with an appropriate code set. This has been the case with seat belt buckles that wear early since you aren't likely to know they won't hold any more and so they ordered a recall to fix them.

The better way to handle it is the way Goodtime did: raise a stink if it fails early and get Toyota rep. involved.

Was the gen. 1 rusty frame repair ordered by NHTSA? I thought it a warranty campaign by Toyota.

If enough people complain to Toyota about the spiral cable, they might make a campaign out of this too. That's why Goodtime's approach is the best...and OP's for that matter since he got some help from Toyota for his repair.

I have an 08 and right after my warranty was up the light came on, went ti the dealer and they quoted me some ridiculous price for the cable plus labor, I decided to just live with it because I cant afford it
