Mountain descent

I know how gears work, manual, etc cause I ride moto. I just needed to know that it was ok to hold down lock release when appropriate without trans damage

 

You can shift into any forward gear without damage unless you're going too fast.

 

Ok man. I just didn’t know why it caught unless holding the button down. Cause it goes with little resistance when holding button

 

when going from "D" to a lower gear you have to press the button on top of the shifter, as always this is a safety feature to prevent you from accidentally shifting down when traveling at speed that could damage the trans or engine. There is no problem going from "L" to "2" to "D" as an auto trans should be kept in the higher gear under "usual" circumstances and it will shift by itself.

I always "down-shift" and use 2 or L if I'm sitting in traffic (slow crawl) or on snowy/icy roads. You do NOT, however, have to stop, just keep it under 30 for "2" and usually 10 for "L" and you won't have any problems.

That button is just so you don't accidentally slam it into L when you're driving down the highway. If you are unsure what speed is "acceptable" for those gears (L and 2) just shift into L and accelerate from a stop until you hit a fairly high rpm. Do the same in 2 and make a note of what speed that is.

Now, when you're driving down a hill, and you shift into 2, that's about the speed you'll want to be.
