I am running 10w-30 amsoil, I should know soon how it is performing because I always send in a sample to blackstone. I think next change I am gonna run 0w-40, or maybe that 0w-30. It doesn’t get super cold in cali often but I don’t think it will hurt. I went with 10w-30 but I don’t think it matters with amsoil as much as other brands that aren’t using true synthetic oil.

I just want to note that if your trans skid has reinforcement ribs on the side that faces the tranny you may have clearance issues. I took my ribs off because luckily I was able to. If anything you could take a grinder and trim them down in some spots to make it work if yours aren’t removable. Or get some spacers to move the skid down slightly.

Make sure and do a fuel efficiency comparison when you make the switch. I’m curious how it’ll turn out.

I can already tell you the 10w is a small disadvantage from 5w oil, I noticed it as soon as I changed oil. I will report my fuel findings switching to 0w oil when I do so. I keep track of all my fill ups so it should be easy to calculate overall mpg

One of the reasons I shifted to 0W-30 in the Tacoma was our (not quite Canada) cold winters here in Colorado, making 0W startup flow desirable. Another was the "true synthetic" point you made - dino oil shears quickly from its rated viscocity to a lower one, while true synthetic is less prone to doing so. With that in mind, I didn't think a heavier synnthetic was required. Another example, unrelated to the Tacoma, is my Shelby. Ford recommends Motorcraft 5W-50 "synthetic", that's not the quality of Amsoil. Oil analysis revealed the Motorcraft shears to the approximate viscosity of Amsoil 0W-40, but with a lesser additive package. Oil analysis confirmed Amsoil's 0W-40 maintains the desired viscosity, as well as more effective additives.

I saw mileage and power improvements in the Shelby and the Tacoma. Another thing I noted was longer warmup time in the Tacoma (that I drive throughout the winter). I didn't do an emprical study, but the time to temp (and heat in the passenger cabin) increased by about 50%, indicating reduced friction within the engine.

awesome data sir! i currently run mobile synthetic stock oil weight. you obviosly have far more knowledge than myself. im in a mild marine seattle climate. if you lived here what oil would you use in your truck?

Well here's one that done! I hate plastic garbage, I don't know how many cracks and seam repairs I ended up making on this thing because the rear of the housing is soft plastic. I'm looking forward to near HID style output though!

Agreed. From a truth in advertising perspective, however, the mileage difference for heat went from ~2 miles to ~3 miles, so we're not talking about a huge amount. In the cold, however, I definitely noticed how much longer it was until my heat and defroster produced noticeable effects. I thought something was wrong with the heater until I checked engine coolant temp!

Not sure about having far more knowledge - I think of myself as a well-read enthusiast. Blackstone Labs provided much of what I've read, in the form of oil analysis reports from my vehicles.

Mobil 1 is good stuff. FWIW, I'd probably run 0W-30 in your climate. (Most engine wear occurs at startup, before things are fully lubricated, which is why I like the 0W option.) I'd consider shifting to 5W (or maybe 10W) if I was in the far southern US, where temps regularly reach/exceed 100 degrees in the summer and the extra viscosity might be more helpful.

+1. Not interested in another "best" oil debate that, for reasons that escape me, usually devolve like discussions about politics and religion.

Politics and religion. Those are two topics I stay far away from! Needless to say I stay pretty far away from oil debates these days. You cannot reason with closed minds.

I don't push my spiritual beliefs on anyone, I just make them available and let them decide.

But yeah, oil preference debates are like running in the special olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded.

There is nothing wrong with any oil. Some use "better" components in their build, but on a short interval that most run it doesn't matter. I've ran everything and heard every Motil/Mobil/Amisol/PennzPlat/etc argument for who makes the best oil and who isn't using the right amount of fairy jizz in their mixture to prevent your engine from peeing out a -1,000,000 miles. They're all stupid. Use what you want. Change it regularly on a short interval and you'll be happy. Same with oil weight IMHO when it comes to going off spec. Sure extreme duty you might see some advantages but otherwise meh over using factory spec on a short interval.

:pout: here comes and goes another weekend without the taco. Holidays are holding up parts for the shop to finish up the exhaust. This is prime wheeling and camping season for us here in Az. The wife and I are dying to get out. About to throw the RTT on the Minitruck. Lol

I mean it is hella funny what he said, but truth be told here, I think we are the unicorn of TW, because we are actually capable of discussing oil weights and intervals while keeping it civil, and respectful too. It's actually really nice. If you venture out if this thread to talk oil weights and such you will quickly have your great ancestors insulted.
