Offroad/Overland Trailers -- Whatcha got?

Just curious what kinda offroad trailers everyone has. Why'd you get that specific one? Why'd you build your own? Which trailer would you like to have if you could?

I personally have owned a Patriot Campers X2 for about a year now. I did tons of tons of research. I had a budget of about $18k, but in my honest opinion...I didn't like anything in that price range. If I was going to spend that much money I wanted a fridge included, running water, portable heater, tons of storage, awning, RTT, etc. I got to looking at either the Turtleback or the Patriot X2. At that time, there were several things I wasn't a fan of with the Turtleback, and I just don't like the general layout. I wanted a Patriot X1GT, but can't justify the price. So, X2 it was! Couldn't be happier with it, I also rent it based out of Fort Worth.

That is a steep price for sure. My 17' Winnie travel trailer cost that much. Granted, it can't go offroad, but it has bunks for the kids and an indoor shower, lol

At that price, is the RTT included?

 

A Tepui RTT was included, the one I have was not. I love it though, I see why it costs so much.

If you are building your own study them online and feel free to ask for pictures as they are smartly built with allot of hidden space saving features that still keep weight distribution a priority. They - used to - have some PDFs that discuss allot of issues that make for good reading and will have you thinking more about how you will address certain issues. If they aren’t available anymore let me know and I’ll dig them out of wherever I have them stored and upload them to TW.

Now with all that said, I love the Track Trailers TVan more and kind of wish I had gone with it instead.

After decades of tent camping both with the millitary and being girl Scout leaders we decided to go a different route. It's just my wife and i right now and with the tacoma we wanted to adventure some. A couple of summers ago we paid the house off and decided it was time. With my bad back and having to sleep with a CPAP machine we settled on looking for a tiny camper we could eventually get outfitted to go off grid. We weere focussed on tear drops until we found the Taxa Tiger Moth. We found a leftover '16 that was brand new and got a great deal. This was a platform that would allow us to get started right away with camping and make mods as we went to suit our needs. With the camper body being all aluminum it is very light stock it weighed in at 900 lbs. It's more like tent camping in a hard sided tent but gives us a small bit of sitting room when the bed is folded up, there is no bathroom so we got a green elephant, and the "kitchen" is a 4' pull out in the rear. It has proven to be a great option for us and we have enjoyed it emensly so far.
I have modded the shit out of it and right now have just about right where we need it. With the addition of dual solar and dual group 31 batteries among a miriad of other things we can head out and go completely away from things for at least a week at a time. Did anyone on this thread attend Overland East this year? I saw some pretty slick Tacoma bed trailers and didn’t know if any of you had info on the builds.

Yep they were pretty cool set ups

 

We run one we built ourselves. Shopped Hiker and similar setups. Never thought they were worth the $15K+ pricetag since we didn't need a decked out unit, just off-road capable and some basic amenities. Figured we could build our own for way less...and have done that twice now.

First a 4x6 with a RTT:





Then realizing we definitely wanted insulated walls and not have to climb into a RTT (getting pretty old in our 30s ), so we sold that one and regrouped and took a 5x8 cargo trailer and hacked it up and made it what we wanted.

Homemade utility trailer for the bike.

 

I am researching this subject as we speak. Currently thinking about picking up a surplus military M105 trailer and starting with that as my base.

 

Recommend you look for a 3/4 ton chassis instead of the M105. Look for an M101A1/2/3, M116A1/2/3, M1101/1102 or an M416 for 1/2 ton. The M105 will have quite a bit of extra weight to it.

It started as a 4x6 utility trailer from Lowe’s. We ordered a custom 3,500 lb angle with 6x5.5 lug nut pattern to match the truck and girlfriend’s 4Runner. The frame is custom made by my gf’s dad who has a shop and I recently added a Lock-n-Roll hitch.

 

Kickass little trailer!

 

It has served us well. I like the literal “blank canvas” that it is. Thinking of adding a drawer system next.

 

This is one of my favorite threads so far. Spending half the price of the truck on a trailer sounds insane to me. Makes me feel not alone in this battle.

 

I wonder if one of the decked systems woud fit then you could still load your totes on top of it
