Cool, then maybe this won't get too out of hand. I haven't even priced parts - just estimating what I'd expect it to cost having browsed through the procedure.

Anybody have a shop in the south Denver metro you'd recommend? Again not looking to save money here - looking to have it done right with all the right parts.

Didn’t know you were in Colorado,
Stop by autonation toyota off Arapaho and I25
    Talk to Jez 303-792-1146.

Tell him the guy with 600,000 miles John referred you
and ask if you can get a discounted rate on your work.
It’s better to stop and talk to him in person and you will a discount.

Have the same old school tech guy that only works on my truck
do your work. He knows them inside and out. That combo is my go to for years now.

Parts are cheaper at Groove toyota tho. You might get a parts list and see if they will match Grooves prices at least.
If you want it done right here is your answer,
You can save a few bucks going somewhere else, but this combo
is the ticket with warranty and OEM parts

Sweet, thanks for the recommendation. I work @ Fiddler's Green so that couldn't be more convenient. Good to know they have an old school wrench around.

600k miles - that's impressive! If my truck lasts like that I'll be driving this thing until I retire lol

If your not worried about the money but the quality think about getting the other parts done
too. I always spend the extra dollar when other work can be done in situations like this
to avoid having an issue later.

    Engine Rear main seal
    Transmission front input shaft seal
    Transfer case input seals
Transmission center mount, there is a plastic type bushing there in the center.
    Redline transmission fluid

May as well do the gear shift ball bushing too.

My clutch went out last year and the carrier bearing needed to be replaced since it was noisy. It costed me about $1,600 for the repairs using OEM parts. I'm not experienced in repairing transmissions so I felt it was better to have my mechanic do the work for me. Well worth it for me as my truck has been repaired correctly and runs great!

Transmission out is usually about $1,000 in my experience. I had a shop diagnose my warped torque converter and flexplate and the labor to do that (dropping the transmission, replacing the flexplate) was around $998 plus the cost of parts.

It's not that hard to do if you don't mind working on your back.

If you can get the truck off the ground 1' more it's actually kind of comfortable to sit under.

Taking off the transfer case from the trans makes it 100% better if it can even be done together, I dunno, I never would have tried.

Just expect it to be stuck coming out and it's not as bad and conversely expect it to be difficult to line back up going in and it's less frustrating.

Remember, even the mechanics will fight those 2 spots so all your doing is giving money away for someone else to get agravated and say "Good thing I'm overcharging".

edit: If you do it yourself, cost is a few hundred bucks. There really not much chance of surprises under there. A new rear seal can be done for what? $30, Could do the Marlin shifter bushings. They're cheap and shifter will be out. I started doing them in H.S. it can't take any brains because I had none.

Jez says hi! Going in for a new clutch Tuesday. Estimated to cost between 1,600 and 1,800 with no surprises.

Thanks again John. Jez knew who you were as soon as I mentioned the mileage :D

It's honestly less than a day's work but it is nice to have an extra guy twice. The two bolts up top are the thing that everyone sees as impossible but you don't have to see a bolt to remove it. 2' of extensions and an impact. Everything else is cake but heavy. No getting around that.

Sounds more reasonable. Parts are whatever you want to spend.

I remember in the '90s somewhere in Houston had a large sign "Any Clutch $250" sounds about right doubled nowdays.

I feel your pain about needing the clutch replaced, but it boils down to how much time do you have to do the repair, your mechanical inclination, acquiring the parts, having the necessary tools, the space to repair the vehicle or getting estimates from either the dealership or local auto shop, taking it to the dealership or local mechanic of your choice to do the repair, paying their rates, and having the time to yourself & not having to perform the repair.

I was up in the air, but blowing a weekend for $500 and maybe screwing it up and causing more damage.... We probably could of tackled it. But hey we got to go duck hunting this am instead. We did spend an hour re greasing all of the zerks on the truck yesterday and logging the work in the binder we have for records.

Another option, have a mechanic friend who's experienced help with the repair, get it done in a timely manner, and give him/her a sum of money to compensate them for their time.
