Thank you everyone, I appreciate the info.

My small 2.4L V-6 stock truck has never been commercial status as of 2002 (new) and I moved to AZ 2019 with title and its commercial. Just seemed weird to me

Appreciate the help since thought it might be fees etc--

You said it came from California right? All trucks in California are registered Commercial. Arizona probably just followed what the Cali title said.

Please take a picture of any registration you have for that vehicle while it was registered in CA.

I was able to do so within 2 minutes; I only ask that you do the same.

Be curious to see your truck registered as personal and not commercial here in CA (even if the registration is expired).

What designation did they change your truck to?
Did it change your insurance at all?
    What state are you?

I've owned pickups for 20+ years, and it's always been like that as long as I can remember.

Pickup trucks all have standard plates, no difference than cars, SUVs etc... the license plate is not what designates it as commercial. It's just a classification purely on paper.

The cost of your registration, afaik, has more to do with its value, not it's classification anyway. My 15 year old Tacoma costs less than my 14 Corolla, which costs less than my 17 4Runner.

That's odd. I was never given a choice as far as registration in CA. All the ones I've owned have been "commercial" but I've never been able to really tell any difference as far as cost. The value holds way more importance on the registration costs.

Can't say about AZ, those guys are weird. Don't they allow quads on the streets? :D

Not so, at least not ALL. Some Tacomas are manufactured in Texas, but the majority are manufactured in Mexico, just across the border in Tijuana. Look on your sticker. Mostly I think, it depends on where your dealer is located. If they are in the West, most likely their trucks will come from Mexico because of geographical factors, if nothing else.

My Taco had commercial plates in CA, but I was under the impression you could get ordinary ones if you have a cap and promise to never take it off.

The good ones (1st gens) were manufactured at the Numi Plant in the Bay Area.

Forgot about the Baja plant, but NAFTA is what allows Toyota to assemble those Trucks in Mexico. If Trump somehow repealed NAFTA, those Mexican Tacomas would be subject to the 25% tax and Toyota would need to move production back to the US.
