Moving from 2nd Gen to 3rd...what to know

Greetings from a 2nd Gen-er!

I have a 2007 TRD, DCLB and have been toying with moving into a 3rd Gen (2016 - 2017 ish)
Anything I should know or be considering regarding the newer TRD Sport or Pro?

Thats a good looking truck.
I have a 3rd gen 2019 and really like it but if I had yours I'd probably stay with it unless you just have to have a new one. If you do decide to trade in I'd go for new 2019 or '20.

 

I’d wait for the 4th generation Tacoma.

Yeah, you'll be fine. 2 second gens and now a third GEN off road. Works great. The manual transmission is awesome. I enjoy it more than both my second gens.

 

Excessive rear diff whine from ~50-60mph is about the only aspect I'd be sure you're ok with before upgrading. Some have it worse than others, but it's the only truly annoying aspect of these trucks IMO, everything else is great, and would be a significant improvement over the 2nd gens.

Test drive one and see how you like it!

I also had an 07 TRD Sport DCLB, loved the truck but was forced to upgrade after a bad accident. I would still be in it otherwise. I’m in an 18’ TRD Sport DCLB now, at first I was a little disappointed with it but that was mostly due to expecting it to be just like the 07’ which it isn’t. The drivetrain is a bit of a different experience at first but the more I drive it the more I love it. It’s a pleasure to drive it now, much quieter than the 07 was, a lot more techy features but nothing real over the top in the 18’. At the end of the day I’m really happy with it, my biggest gripe is not option for a DCLB up here in Canada.

I would agree here, I'd recommend the 20 for the technology upgrades.. the 20 is a big difference over any previous model

 

My 3rd gen is a solid machine. Love it more everday, you will not be dissapointed.

 

Rumors are the 4th generation will debut in the fall of 2022 as a 2023 model (36 months way). The all new 2021 Tundra is making its debut next fall.

 

I got my '19 in April and have had no issues at all. Get a '19 or a '20. Get it undercoated. Get some good floor mats and a bed mat. Looks like you do some off-roading, get a skid plate. Then drive the shit out of it and enjoy it.

 

4th gen needs to debut sooner. Seems like the 3rd gen has been around for a decade now.

 

The current truck is basically a heavily revised 2nd generation truck that debuted in 2005.5. The 2nd and 3rd generation cab shell is identical other than some safety enhancements under the skin. Even the rear doors on a DC are identical as Toyota didn’t even bother designing a new door skin.

The current Tundra is a dinosaur in the truck world, it debuted in 2007. Toyota still sells 100k copies a year though because of its bulletproof reputation

 

People will tell you the auto sucks and complain about lack of engine power. My advice is buy the truck and stay off the forum for awhile so you can draw your own unbiased conclusion and not sweat the small stuff. I have zero issues with my truck and no complaints and consistently get 21 mpg in town.

 

Second this. I admit, the 3.5 with auto trans isn't the best highway cruiser, but it doesn't bother me anymore. I'd prefer my truck to stick in final gear going up inclines and just torque through the hill, but it downshifts most times. There's no lack of power in this engine, it just resides higher in the RPM band.

That being said, it's an absolute joy in the city, and a monster off road. Get a 2020, or wait for this alleged 4th gen if you aren't in a hurry.

Haha right. I didn't know my truck sucked until I kept reading that it does

60k miles and thousands off road and on trails. The more time I use my truck and enjoy it, the harder it is to come onto this forum these days.

 

I'd be hesitant to stay on this forum if you end up with a 3rd gen, the constant complaints will make you question your truck and imagine issues that you never would have noticed prior.

All that to say, minus a few warranty repairs (out of spec rear axle, squeaking leaf springs, and out of round drums) my 2017 has been awesome. Love it more every day.
