This is the best "mod" for our trucks. I went from 265/75R16 Load Range E to 255/75R17 Load Range C. Went up ~1/2" in diameter to a 32" tire and there is noticable power/braking performance back as well as better gas mileage.

As for the original question, I think the CHARCOAL (grey) "SEMA" wheels look best on the 1st gens. I hate the black wheel trend, but to each their own.

I ended up with 2012 FJ Cruiser Trail Edition wheels (the similar year 4runner are lighter grey).

285/70/17 previously had 285/75/16 and no looking back. Made a 1000 mile trip each way to Moab earlier this year and averaged about 17 mpg

Damn that’s awesome. I guess moving to a 17” gave you the option of a C rated tire?

I had wanted these wheels for awhile, so when the TRD anniversary sale happened, I had to find tires lol. These were off a new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Got 5 for $600

Thats awesome. I found a set for $400 with decent looking tires 265/70 Nittos. Also found a set of bfg 285/70r17 on 4runner wheels for $550 but they are load E.
