it’s got quite a bit of pep if you are cruising down the interstate. I can tow in 5th all day and there’s only been a few spots out west I couldn’t do in 5th.

you be our local test subject. In your neck of the woods I presume there are no emission requirements like I have here in the hood. I'm holding out hope for the SC. If Mat bails on his SC I will look at Under Dog - probably shit can the entire idea if there is no Tune with transmission logic revision to match competitor products. I will just pretend my Audi is my Toyota with BOOST!

I don't see this being an issue. Factors for it are usually waiting too long on oil changes, DI turbo engines trying to get away with running 87, and small displacement.

The cams, in our case can be used to control total cylinder fill at very low rpm so even at higher boost psi we can control pressure bleed off before the valves close.

That's awesome! I actually blew the 2.0 in my previous ST due to LSPI, so this is very reassuring.

^^I've had my eyes on the TT setup since it will provide the most low end HP/torque (area under the curve) but the recent developments with the multiple SC kits have me contemplating which one suits me best. So... trying to narrow down my choice btw the 2 types of SC (centrifugal vs roots) first then eventually BTW the TT kit and SC kit.

I feel that the roots SC (linear power, slightly more low end torque) would suit the Taco needs better than the Rotrex (exponential power curve, more high end power). My impression is that the Rotrex only provides power at higher RPM's and under more throttle. Since there is plenty of power with our 3.5 at the high end I feel like the Rotrex would not be addressing what this engine lacks.

Also, those on TW who've had the roots SC with other engines always seem fond of the setup and continue to recommend it. Sometimes its not always about the peak HP/torque dyne numbers but how that HP/torque is applied and the drivability of the setup.

For me, it's going to be btw a roots SC kit versus the TT kit. Regardless of kit, would prefer OV tuning given the time and developments Mat has made with this engine. Exciting times for the 3rd gen Taco owners.

Roots and TT will be the favourites for sure.

I m in the same boat. I like the roots for lower temps and not needing to tap into the engine oil. Sounds like it's going to be significantly more expensive than the TT though.

The particular Magnuson and Harrop superchargers that were recently unveiled for the 3rd gen are actually screw type superchargers, not roots. This is a good thing though, as a screw type makes more power and is more efficient than a roots. With that said, I would be shocked if either of those kits can hold a candle to low end toque that the twins will produce. They also won’t be nearly as efficient.

That is not to say they won’t haven’t plenty of power on tap, it just wont be what you can get from a properly tuned TT setup, running relatively small turbos like Mat has put together. It’s great to see so many options coming to the table, and it looks like there will be something to keep everyone happy if you’re willing to pony up.

It’s a TVS with 4 lobes and 160 degree twist which makes it look like a screw but I believe it’s still considered a roots. A Whipple would be a screw type. URD offers a nice 2.3L oversized whipple kit for the later 1grfe engines.

I’m fairly confident that with the small turbos that Mat is using, and being top mounted, the turbos will spool so fast that we’ll get all the low end power that this truck needs, if not more.

I have nothing against SC but turbos seem like the way to go for this engine and most applications of it.

So I'm at about 60k on my truck. Does anyone know the factory warranty on drive and engine on the 3rd gen? I'm going to assume that you will forfeit the warranty with the turbos applied?

it is very torquey and I'm off road again.
4 low is very controllable. But also in boost it picks up fast.
4 high hahaha wow. The way the torque picks up is just phenominal

2w off road just constant spin

    Tested, really thrashing it:
    2WD off road
    4 high off road
    4 low off road

really beating on it, stomping the pedal in 4 low, revving to 6500.
Just back to back to back. full throttle from a dead stop to top of 2nd in 4 high, 15 times in a row.
on the road and off the road.
not only does it respond beautifully but no issue whatsoever. nothing is breaking yet.

    this is on about ~8-10psi
