I'll trade ya a tire rotation, some fluid film and a radiator support bushing for em.

 

Have to look and see what I paid for them and what people are selling them for. Would also have to figure out what I would be replacing them with.

Another possibility here....IF they are the cause of the signal noise, is just to pull them off the stock foglight circuit and run them off separate switch and relay to the battery. I only ever use them when I’m off-road or it’s raining and dark.

 

Nah, u don't wanna do that. Best to get rid of them for much below MSRP just to be done with em. Why deal w the Hassel?

 

Maybe I’ll just get some clazzios and some radio knobs.

 

Will this thread hurt the resale value of 3rd gens? I see a lot of 3rd gens with lighting modifications.

 

I got some front weathertechs and some OEM headlights. Best just trade straight up for em.

 

This is not directed at the OP.....

If values ever tank, and they won’t ....third gen owners will be the ones to ultimately cause more hurt to the resale value of the third gen. These shit boxes have been known to:

1. Dry out eyeballs due to a malevolent hvac system

2. Have insufficient wiper coverage

3. Have too lengthy of an owners manual to bother reading.

4. Permanently damage shins

5. Have a history of fooling owners into draining the tranny instead of the oil.

6. Have an oil filter system that is apparently easy for 4Runner and tundra owners to deal with but gives people here fits.

7. Have too much chrome in the glove box key hole

8. Blow fuses when hacks try to wire in their raptor lights and eBay lightbars.

9. Have an automatic transmission where 90% of the issues can be avoided by simply putting it in S mode and pressing the ETC button, but most forum users think this is too much trouble and would rather post complaint after complaint.

Rams have a shit ton of real issues, as do the hd fords and gm products, but you will not hear the endless drum beat of whining and bellyaching that goes on here.

 

Don't agree w 8, but everything else seems some what fair.

So have I. Should have testing results today. I'm trying to be as patient as possible with the dealer since they have been great this whole time.

 

Wait, so BD Fogs are causing extra noise in the electrical? Did I follow that right or is it all speculation still?

 

That was Toyota's original claim after performing the oscilloscope test. After I asked them to do the test again, at my expense, with the foglights unplugged, the FTS would not allow them to do that and admitted that he wasn't sure it was the fog lights but that it is definitely due to aftermarket part interference.

At this point, I am waiting on the dealership to perform additional oscilloscope testing today, at my expense, while unplugging each aftermarket part, one by one, to determine what, if anything is the source of the noise.

 

OP I didn't read it all but I did have a similar issue with a car a while back where it kept blowing fuseable links. It turned out to be a short in the Alternator. Likely for this job it will take a proper Automotive Electrician to give it the once over to really find the issue. I don't think it's related to the squadrons as I have them myself and so do probably thousands of others in 2016+ Tacoma's for that matter with no issues. As you said you blew 2 prior to ever installing the lights. Did they replace the Headlight Assembly or just the DTR itself? Nothing should need to be disconnected for the Electrician to find the issue they will measure the volts per wire and see if there is something that is spiking or unusually high and follow it to the source. It may cost you a bit but if it's a stock part you can bring that to said dealer with proof and say here you go and ask that they not only replace it but ask that they reimburse you or a portion of it for having to find the issue yourself. I think it's fair they're doing this test at your expense. Afterall you have afermarket parts installed that are a potential root cause to the issue.

As the servivce manager though I'd probably reimburse you if it turns out that by unplugging the aftermarket lights doesn't do provide different results.

Kinda like what VW did to me for my VW TDI under warranty.
They said "Hey we have to charge you to read the code, if the code is something under warranty, we will void the cost, if it's not, we have to charge the $120 diagnostic fee".

 

They replaced both assemblies in full so no further diagnostic info on the cause of the prior failures or the type of failure. Hoping to have some answers today, whether I like them or not.

Edit: multiple people have also expressed that they think the alternator is likely to blame.

 

That is what I would expect here but I wouldn't want the dealer to reimburse me, I would want Toyota to pay the dealer and then diagnose the actual cause of the failure(s).
